Hello,

Following on from this thread in 2016:

Looking to replace my laptop with a desktop preferably and I'm thinking ex-lease before new.

Any recommended places to visit and see their selection?

Background - current laptop is just slow with editing my drone photos in Adobe Lightroom and stops when i try and play the 4k footage. Not a gamer so after something that covers everyday computing and image/video editing.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have purchased several at PBTech over the years ranging in price from $199 to $900. All Intel 'i' or 'U' series as I recall. No problems at all.

My business has moved to exclusively using (and selling to clients who want a used machine) exlease Dell PC's and laptops. I buy the CPU-only and pull the HDD and replace it with a Samsung Evo 860 SSD and put a graphics card in because Dell use Displayport and I prefer HDMI and because it performs better. Add new keyboard, mouse and new monitor as applicable and it's a winning combination.

Optiplex 9020 is the one you want to be looking at if it's a desktop you are after. The mini-tower or SFF (small form factor) are the ones you want to look at. AFAIK the USFF (ultra small form factor) has only 1 RAM slot and can't accept an external graphics card.

Only thing to keep in mind with Dell is some parts are a bit propriatory in terms of fit.

Also bear in mind prices for this sort of stuff can vary by quite a bit and I would recommend not getting the cheapest or buying from any general used goods company. There is e-waste grade and ex-lease grade. The later is around the $300 mark for an Optiplex 9020 or equivalent I-5. +$100 for an I-7. (Prices approx).

I have come across e-waste Dell and we don't sell it. It typically has screws missing, is damaged, or otherwise doesn't look like a new/near-new item.

Keep in mind...

Ex lease Brand name PC's (Hp Lenovo Dell etc) might be using non standard parts , especially the SFF
When out of warranty , that makes them near impossible to repair (economically) if its anything other than HD

Ive seen the most stupid non standard connectors on brand name PC's , for no good reason, even on brand name Tower PC's.
That means I sometimes cant use an industry standard power supply even to just test the thing
I'll never buy or supply another .

Depending on the quality of your footage, editing in Adobe won’t be considered everyday usage.

Ideally the i7 from these ex-lease (ivy bridge 3770 in most cases) will be good to get along with enough memory to support your photo editing.

Only issue with these things is that they’re pushing 6-7 years already. Don’t be surprised if it suddenly dies in the next year or so.

Check out the Dell 5600/5610/7600/7810 type Xeons. I recently bought a Dual 12 core Xeon with 128GB RAM and 8GB GFX card (great for video - about GTX1050 gaming performance) for a bit over 2 grand I think. In any case, total bargain. I see NZ PC clearance has some dual core Xeons at the moment.

My inexperience speaking here - is there much difference between the i5 & i7?

Not at all.

There are plenty of 3 - 4 year old machines and if you computers die at 6-7 years you should consider the quality of your componentry.

The i7 will get you hyperthreading, 4c 8t over the i5 which only has 4c 4t.

Of course if they are haswell/devils canyon spec machines go for those since they’re not that old.

Entirely reasonable for motherboards(common point of failure after disk & memory) to start failing around the 6-8 year mark. Combination of high system on-time, temperatures and crappy power delivery can cause it to start flaking out. With ex-lease you never know what you’re getting unless you find out where it’s from.

There is a reason most places only give a 3-6month warranty from dat of sale.

Just buy this (after confirming it really is dual CPU)... The thread speed is Decent but not brilliant for new games (still fine) but for your described use, it's a great solution. You might end up wanting to put a g=better GFX card in, but again, for productivity work it's great.
