Hi all

I have a WD MyCloud that has stopped working. It won't pick up over the network, and won't even recognise when plugged directly in to the laptop via usb. I've tried suggestions from the website support and forums but to no avail. I was wondering if anyone could suggest somewhere in Wellington/Hutt Valley that might be able to fix it, or at least retrieve the files for me and put on a new drive. It has a lot of video content.

First , what’s the data worth to you.... if it’s irreplaceable then stop doing anything with the drive and call a professional data recovery organisation , datalab and forensic are two I have seen mentioned round here.

Secondly, if the data is not worth paying to get back, then start looking up your backups for copies of the files

Thirdly go buy two new drives , ... the second one is to back up what you put on the new one

Definitely this, first and foremost.

If however, you want to try and recover the data yourself, I've had success on a couple of occasions with PhotRec: https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

As above. If you value the data, send it to datalab, but expect to pay around $1k

Otherwise, replace the contents onto a new drive.

Can you still hear the drive spinning when you turned it on?

Something is ticking or spinning. But if it's a thousand dollar fix then it's probably not something I will pursue. This has helped me look up a few options though, so I might get a couple of quotes and see how it looks.
