Looking for something that will store around 3-5TB. I have had iDrive for the past couple of years.

File based backup is a pain, and whilst they have image backups, restore of files from that is a pain.  Restore speed seems...passable..

It's fine, it was very cheap year one, pretty cheap year two and is now comparable with options like:

BackBlaze

Opentext Carbonite backup (may have a large file limitation which would be a PITA).

LiveDrive

Interested in what others do, and how they find these various services for backup/restore speed?

I'd probably want about 300GB pretty quickly, the rest could come back over a week.

I backup to AWS S3 using Restic. It's a bit more DIY, but you have more control.

Otherwise BackBlaze is good, and very easy.

Used to use backblaze personal on windows.  because I could, I had 4tb on there. Is $103 USD a year ($180...since it just renewed)

Then I made the decision to move ot linux, and put in b2 via restic.   Dropped amount I was storing to < 1tb.  For this I was paying about $4 USD a month.

Either way I was using backblaze

Like some others, I use backblaze. Originally used their PC backup tool on Windows. Some time ago moved it to Linux and started using B2 storage with rclone to backup to it. Little bit more manual though not difficult. I dont have a huge amount to backup (mostly just family photos). Only paying ~$1.20 month for it.

As for performance... when I did my original sync it wasnt that speedy but I was on ADSL or maybe VDSL by then (it was that long ago). What is good about it is that it only needs to sync differences after that so there's never much to do.

I have had to recover files before (had a HD die). Downloading them was fast enough - it gives you a zip of the ones you select IIRC.

All in all the speed isnt a concern (for me).

Like @nzkc I use Backblaze's B2 and rclone to do the actual backing up/syncing. I think I'm using just over the amount of space they give you for free and so get charged a couple of cents a month, although their accounting system is clever enough to let that accumulate until it's actually worth them charging my credit card.

I just decided to renew iDrive, it's not amazing, but it's good enough and within the same price bracket as most the other options, and the thought of having to setup a new backup right now seems a bit of a challenge. Thanks for the input from others.
