They should have a spare server set up. Call it coin project server, when the main work units are running low, there could be an option to do small 10-60 min coinmining based projects. While your client trys to download work units The Coin server would be used to fund more servers, or some location based ones or for funding Charity projects

I wonder how many bitcoins a minute the fah cluster could produce?

just make the work not specific for a CPU or GPU.

just make small and large tasks, and have the client run a quick benchmark once a week to see which type of tasks it should get.

New Folding@home software with the option to prioritize COVID-19 projects April 17, 2020

In response to popular demand, we have created an update to the Folding@home software that allows you to prioritize COVID-19 projects. We encourage you to upgrade as the new software includes important bug fixes and security updates. Downloads are available here. Please also join me in thanking the Center for the Science and Engineering of Living Systems (CSELS) at Washington University in St. Louis for funding the development of this software update.

Our top priority for this release was to add the COVID-19 option as quickly as possible. We also took the opportunity to fix many of the issues raised by our volunteers, but did not address those that would have caused significant delays in the release of the new software. To better address important bugs in the future, we’ve organized a team of volunteer developers who are sorting through and prioritizing our issue tracker on GitHub. They are already making huge strides.

Looking towards the future, we are also working on a new Open-Source Folding@home software. This new software will improve the performance of Folding@home and make it easier to get the community involved in its development. By tapping into the massive amount of technical talent available in the Folding@home community, we believe we can produce better software with a more engaging and productive user experience and update that software more often.

I've just updated, it's fine to do it with work units in progress. I had a CPU and GPU unit running and they resumed after update with no problems.

On another subject, I'm almost up to full production now. I'm only missing a couple of GPU slots per day yesterday and was crunching CPU units all the time. :)

The problem with larger units that take a day is people not seeing progress, numbers not moving and then stopping the processing. The server then needs to wait sometime before deciding that unit is not going to ever come back and assign it to someone else. This means a lot of wasted time for everyone.

At the moment I have a CPU and GPU units on FAH, both with a 11 hours 45 minutes ETA - and this will be too long for some people that want to see progress.

that goes back to my point about the "slow" vs "fast" computers, you should get the smaller units as then you get bite sized chunks to process at the slower speed. those who have a modern gpu that mows through units should get the larger, longer ones.

FAH is good anyways as it tell you your estimated PPD and Estimated credit for the units its working on. The likes of Rosetta do not.
