Replying to myself incase it helps anyone else.... the way is to click "Learn More" which takes you to the "Upgrade from G Suite legacy free edition" and the subsequent "What if I use G Suite legacy free edition for personal use?".
I clicked through and confirmed it was for personal use and it's sorted.
Good result, glad I just waited and waited!
Cheers,
Joseph
Perfect. I just did the same. Hopefully nothing else is required.

Another vote for Fastmail. They offer the best Webmail I've used so far. Excellent integration with iOS so everything just works fine with native apps. On Android their own app is great for Email/Calendar while a paid app is needed to get Contacts Sync to work.
Anyway, back on topic, I easily switched to the personal use edition by logging into the admin console.

So it looks like Google has really botched this.
It seems that they don't have a downgrade path to go back to G Suite Legacy so if you go through this 🔼 it looks like you get Workspace Business Starter for free. I'm not sure what the difference is but at the least it's 30GB instead of 15GB.
Google Support:
You are receiving this email because you have used the Support Assistant to opt-in to an alternative Workspace experience at no cost. This option is only available to customers who were previously on G Suite legacy free edition and are using Workspace for personal use.
This email serves as confirmation that you have opted-in and there is no further action needed at this time.
For next steps:
You can continue to enjoy your Google Workspace edition for no cost. You will not be billed for your Google Workspace account for the foreseeable future
Thank you!

My comments and remarks are not necessarily of my employer.
Others seem to think they don't update the billing page in real time -- a few days delay -- but time will tell.
Just worked out a few days back I would be able to keep my service after all. I did already transition my primary domain to Workspace, but I had held off with 3 others
The relief is palpable!
I have about 9 accounts using this Gsuite service across 4 domains who are ALL personal use. I just wish they would allow secondary domains on this service, that would simplify admin SO MUCH...
I do believe they gave in to global pressure, there will have been tens if not hundreds of thousands trying to ask for some way to keep it. Some of those asking would have been doing so through their lawyers, I seem to recall they actually made the commitment when stopping new people from registering that this would be free forever, and maybe somebody kept that info? It is quite likely my memory on this is faulty, as I haven't had any luck chasing down announcements about the changes in 2012...

Now that they have acknowledged that families use G Suite, will they allow us to use family services like YouTube Family? (I think I know what the answer is...)
Received this a few days ago

Please take action before June 27, 2022, to avoid service disruption.
Dear Administrator,
We previously notified you that you’ll need to upgrade from the G Suite legacy free edition to Google Workspace by June 1, 2022, or your account would be automatically upgraded. However, we've recently updated our timeline for the transition and you now have until June 27, 2022 to take action.
Along with this change, we’ve added an offer for those using G Suite legacy free edition for non-commercial use, such as individuals and families, to opt out of the transition.
What do I need to do?
For businesses, the G Suite legacy free edition will no longer be available after June 27, 2022 (updated from June 1, 2022). We recommend you upgrade now to a Google Workspace subscription that meets your needs. Upgrading from your G Suite legacy free edition to Google Workspace will only take you a few short steps and is not disruptive to your end-users.
When you've identified your preferred subscription follow these steps:
If you take no action by June 27, 2022, we’ll start upgrading your organization seamlessly to a new Google Workspace subscription. The new subscription will be based on what you currently use with your G Suite legacy free edition. To complete your upgrade and avoid account suspension, you'll need to set up Google Workspace billing before August 1, 2022.
In addition to recent innovations like smart canvas, meetings in documents, and dedicated Spaces to help organize people, topics and projects, Google Workspace includes more storage, increased security, 24/7 support, and more. To upgrade from G Suite legacy free edition and avoid account suspension, switch now and enter your billing details in your Admin Console before August 1, 2022. You'll have limited time discount options to support you in this transition.
If you’re an individual or family using your account for non-commercial purposes, you can continue using the G Suite legacy free edition and opt out of the transition to Workspace in the Google Admin console before June 27, 2022.
In case that you need to reactivate your account, you’ll need to log into the Admin console and enter a valid form of payment.
Qualifying educational institutions and nonprofits have the option to migrate to Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals or Workspace for Nonprofits without service disruption.
