Just for those that are using CrashPlan, there is a way to backup to a NAS.
If you have a share setup on the NAS, say one called Backups, then you basically mount that share as a virtual folder (symbolic Link) on your local HDD and point Crashplan at that as it sees it just as another folder on your HDD.
I am using it like this and it is working great.

Here is the basic command you use for Windows Vista/7:

mklink /d "local\directory" "\\NAS\share"


For me I used:

mklink /d "C:\NAS" "\\NAS\backups"

Now when I browse the C: on my local machine I see a folder called NAS (actually looks like a shortcut as the icon has the little arrow on it) and when you open that folder you see the contents of \\NAS\Backups.
Crashplan creates it's own folder in the "C:\NAS" location, with a whole sting of numbers, once you set that as the backup destination.

An alternative (what I am using for Acronis Non-Stop Backup) is to have a SCSI target pointing to the NAS, if the NAS supports it... It looks just like a SCSI drive ;)

Does anyone have any issues with the backup being based offshore - or is that old school thinking...

We're looking for a nice lazy way to backup our file server at work - the AIT tapes just annoy everyone, and crashplan looks pretty cool...

We use CrashPlan and have no problems with it being somewhere outside NZ. Obviously you have to check what are your company's policies or law requirements to keep data in New Zealand.

And I don't believe any NZ company is going to be much faster to upload to....but you may be able to get a seeding service, which we can't take advantage of with an overseas company.
