Dont think I could disagree more. How is the car manufacturer responsible for after market car stereo changes/fittings? How are they responsible for semi-fixed hands free phone chargers or GPS devices?

It'd have to be an option to have a screen only add-on for sure otherwise people would complain about it doing nothing.

But ultimately its the drivers responsibility to maintain concentration whilst driving. If they have something that distracts them (screen, phone, drink, cigarette) then they should go without it.

I wish auto manufacturers would do the same. install a screen and generic hardware into the center console with a generic API for the auto functions, and just let you drop in an SD card with an OS.

Gone are the days of most cars using the standard single or double DIN fittings. My car has an integrated stereo and AC unit, so I can't replace the stereo without losing all my AC :(

I have a NUC running Windows 7, absolutely no issues with it. A great wee thing! It's hooked up to our newly purchased TV now. The older smaller TV has retired to our bedroom so I'll be looking for a device to use on it. The Intel Stick looks just the thing for it! Can't wait!

Without hijacking the thread too much further - what model NUC are you using ? They seem affordable enough at the low end, around $220 for the Celeron N2820, but are they grunty enough for NZ streaming services ? I have an older 2-core AMD ACER (3 y.o.) that seems to struggle at near 100% CPU, and quite often stutters - about every 3 mins or so. Playing network media via VLC or WMC is all good though. . A quad core I5 barely registers additional CPU usage for streaming, Was watching The Last Ship - TVNZ OnDemand

Mine is Haswell i5, 4GB RAM, 64 GB SSD. It really flies as an HTPC.

Couldn't agree more especially since they seem to abandon the car with whatever it shipped with and only fix major glitches in the console.

There is a difference between aftermarket and what was suggested which was that a cradle or standard interface was created allowing a user to put their own dashboard and interface into it. The problem would be not with the "authorized" people but the people who created "hacked" or "rooted" versions.

I saw something on the web about these becoming available toward end of Q1 and didn't want to get too excited figuring since when are suggested availability dates ever achieved?!!

I saw something on the web about these becoming available toward end of Q1 and didn't want to get too excited figuring since when are suggested availability dates ever achieved?!!

Nathan is referring to a Chinese clone which has the same specs on paper from Alibaba. I think one of his previous posts in this thread has the link. It may be the same or it may not be. A genuine Intel one may or may not be better. Only a head to head when the Intel comes out will show up any differences.

Thought I'd chime in here. Bought one of the Chinese clones on AliExpress. They come with an unactivated version of Windows 8.1 with Bing and you can forget about activating it - its a nightmare. Yes, you can put Linux on it, but there are strings attached. Lots of them.

Long story short - all you need to do is to re-install a 32-bit version of Windows 8.1 and then activate it (if you've bought one from AliExpress or the like, make sure to get the drivers from your seller). Worked like a charm and I'm running Kodi 14.2 on it. Its been going 24/7 for a week now, no issues, not even with streaming live TV from an HDHomerun.

Lessons learnt:
1) The version with 2GB is worth the extra price.
2) Pay more and get activated Windows 8.1 from the get go.

who is the ODM for this one that you have out of interest

The Windows 8.1 with Bing license should totally be able to be activated

It was my understanding that the Intel Compute Stick was supposed to be released in march of this year, however, the web doesn't seem to have lit up with it.

I have not heard of any pricing, but I would guess NZ$220-250 including GST would be reasonable.
