There are easy ways to enable AHCI drivers without a reinstall (unless you change the motherboard which then does need a reinstall). In Windows 7 is a regedit away, in Windows 8 is a reboot in safe mode away.

AHCI provides much better performance because it offer Native Command Queueing

If it boots up to windows try uninstalling the required driver and install the latest version after restarting.
If it doesn't boot up save the data in some other hard drive and Install a fresh operating system.
