I am having a bad computer sunday. Recently have been getting message every now and again that nvidia display driver has stopped working. Turned it on this morning to do something unrelated and had little black lines through the screen. Did some googling of the problem and updated display driver also saw some recommendations to update bios.

Fast forward to the bios update, scrolled through the bios update risk warnings (she'll be right), update completed, pc restarted, felt a little nervous at the anticipation of what was going to happen, BSOD restart, Argggh shoot

So now I have a BSOD as soon as the windows logo starts to appear during startup.
It also BSOD's in safe mode.
Windows startup recovery did not help.
I have tried switching between sata ahci and ide modes in the bios, same thing happens.
Voltages and clock frequencies appear ok

System info:
Windows 7 64 bit
i5 2400 processor
Gigabyte H67MA-D2H-B3 Board
500gb 3.5" sata hdd
geforce gtx460 graphics card

I know a bit about computers but I am not an expert. Any suggestions?

Do you have any kind of boot disk? A macrium reflect backup with recovery environment, Windows PE, Ubuntu, etc? Getting anything running tells you the PC is fine, in which case you'd reinstall Windows - to a new disk if you're not backed up.

Have you disabled auto reboot on blue screen so you can google the error message and error code? This should give you a direction to look at a bit closer.

After flashing to BIOS do you boot back in to the BIOS and reset defaults?

BSOD error is 0x0000007B apparently (caused by device driver issues (especially those related to hard drive and other storage controllers), viruses, data corruption, and sometimes even hardware failures.

I can get into windows recovery environment.

I have tried loading optimized and fail-safe defaults

Update: After bios was flashed, I loaded optimized defaults and saved it. This is what it said in the instructions for Q-Flash

If sata control mode is set to AHCI, when I go to 'standard cmos feature' nothing is listed under IDE channnels

If I set sata control mode to 'IDE' My HDD is listed but it is listed as a slave

I could flash an older bios version but would rather leave that as a last resort

Strange, I was running out of options so I switched to RAID even though I only have one HDD... and it booted right up. Glad I don't have to reinstall the os again, now just got to figure out what is going on.

Possibly it was set to RAID before but you did not realise it so when you loaded the BIOS defaults it changed the settings and your woes began.

Are the lines gone, btw?

Yes, today was the first time I have seen the lines, making me think I should do something about the fact I keep getting temporary black screens saying nvidia display driver has stopped working.

I got the computer second hand about a month ago with no HDD, so I think you are probably right. I now have the most recent bios and display driver which was released about a week ago so will see how it goes.

Now I need to figure out whether it is worth the trouble of switching it back to ACHI

Personally I would re-install windows after re-setting things up in the BIOS, but that is just me :)

As mentioned above I only have one 500gb 3.5" spinner at the moment which is currently a bottleneck.
I am thinking of cloning this disk onto an ssd for the os in the future and keeping the 500gb 3.5" spinner for not frequently accessed photos/videos/etc which do not need to be on the ssd.

As I understand it there are no detrimental effects of having the bios and os set to use raid with a single HDD. Even if I had a single SSD, CMD tells me that TRIM is enabled.

However am I going to run into problems when I add an SSD for the OS as described above?

Basically you had some settings in your BIOS that were overwritten by the new one. Windows was originally installed and used drivers specific for those settings (in your case the RAID).

This also happens if you install your HDD with IDE/SATA drivers then later deviced to change to AHCI drivers - Windows doesn't have those by default, BSOD.

Glad is working now. Don't need to reinstall.

You should be fine as you are, but you should also be able to install the SATA chipset drivers while in the working configuration to have it available to the OS, or use Paragon Adaptive Restore.

You said you were getting black lines and video driver issues before the BIOS upgrade - replace the video card if problems continue.

Running drives in "RAID" is fine, but ideally you do want them as ACHI - but as others mentioned, could lead to issues without a re-install.
