Yea I don't have any experience in overclocking the G3258 but didn't think there would be much headroom with the stock cooler. If he didn't want to overclock, swapping out the cpu for an i3 would be better.

Ex-lease pcs may be cheaper but I don't know how big the cases on those are and whether they'd fit a graphics card

It's a wonder CPU, I'm running mine at 4.2GHz, with stock cooler, 1.1v vcore. Only thing to know is you need to delete/rename mcupdate_genuineintel.dll if you want to overclock on windows 10 with a non z97 chipset.

There are some good options there but you'd have to buy a graphics card for most and there are issues with doing that for the HP8100 SFF.

The main problem with SFF (small form-factor) desktops is the limitations on the graphics cards you can install in them because of the small case. They also have small power supplies that generally cannot run a useful graphics card. Typically you'd want at least a 500W supply and even higher is usually better to ensure you have enough headroom at the voltages used by the graphics cards.

I haven't used one of these but I've had three older models and finding a suitable graphics card was a big problem. They were much scarcer with much lower price-performance, assuming you can even find one that doesn't require a larger power supply.

I haven't dealt with that trader but some of the prices have attracted me in the past.

I've bought a few laptops from that seller and have been pretty happy with both the condition and price. The latest one has more cosmetic damage than I would have liked, but delivery is very fast.

A friend recently asked me to help buy a budget gaming PC for his son. I've been out of the gaming scene for quite a while now so am watching this thread with interest. A budget of $500 isn't much to play with when looking for new parts !

I picked up an ex-lease Dell i5 3470 with 8GB RAM and 500GB HDD for $300 a few months ago. Chuck in a graphics card add a 24" monitor and I would hope that should do the trick.

Any thoughts on an i5 2400 with 8GB and a seperate graphics card for low level gaming ?

Any suggestions on the kind of card to look out for ?

As to graphic cards, you can use a site like game-debate.com to check out the specs and performance of specific cards. The free tools allow you to do useful comparisons between cards. A paid membership provides better tools

The one I bought was an Optiplex 3010. It wasn't bought for gaming, just to use as a desktop for a friend to replace his old P4 ! I have a feeling its only got a 250W PSU in it though.

I'm googling cards right now :)
