gzt: There is something called DDC protocol with provision for backlight control.

As usual implemented or correctly implemented by the monitor manufacturer varies.

This app mentions DDC http://clickmonitorddc.bplaced.net and there are others.

That app works perfectly. whatever it is set to is whatever the monitor hardware brightness changes too.

I use f.lux - use it, for the first week you'll see a noticeable orange however after that you won't notice it. Just a protip set the timeout to 30mins between transitions and you won't notice it has changed. Been using it for years, it is amazing how the brain adapts in the end as if I use a device without it I get blinded.
