idlearts:

I'm curious why changing your dns didn't work with everydns, your site is currently resolving to http://www.modernbill.com/
If you want me to have a look I'll pm you with details

Sure, that would be awesome.

I've tried it twice with two different IP addresses, one is the one I see in my OpenHost plesk panel, and the other is the one I see in my cleverinternet plesk panel. Same result each time. What info do you need in order to look at it?

Thanks

Thought I'd add my two cents worth.

I work for a company who is affected by this fiasco. OpenHost host the website and manages the domain registration. It's kind of easy to have everything in one place where you have complete control over DNS settings etc. Not all providers let you fiddle with DNS settings and rightly so.

I have also completed the "hack" using the free EveryDNS.net system and it seems to be working. Of course foreign DNS servers seem to up date quickly and New Zealand servers a bit later. However, finally my ISP's [TelstraClear] DNS servers are showing the correct DNS settings when queried via nslookup.

As an I.T. Professional I am glad I found this thread and thanks to idlearts for the tip. PLESK [or at least the version OpenHost use] is not the most user friendly system to muddle around in, especially when we have 4 domains with two linked. But it seems to be working so I hope I have done it right. Now we have email again. Communication = money | and I was getting grilled by a managing director for this unfortunate incident.

I am not an IT specialist, but could someone please run me through the procedure that seems to work?

I created an everydns.net account
Added new domain (zozoliving.com)

The application came up with two records:
Host: www.zozoliving.com
Type: CNAME
Value: parked.everydns.net

And
Host: zozoliving.com
Type: A
Value: 64.195.235.119

Should I keep these two records, or delete them and adding the four records (3 As and an MX) as suggested previously?
Do I have to tick a box at the field that say "Axfr Control"?

Think I managed to get the list of four entries into everyDNS.net
(I just deleted the existing records)

Next: the note on this page states:
Make sure that your domain points to
ns1.everydns.net
,
ns2.everydns.net,
ns3.everydns.net, and
ns4.everydns.net
in your registrar's whois database.
Without that, none of your records will resolve properly.

Going into plesk I do see the first three.
How do I get the fourth entry changed?
Where do I go?

no don't click the Axfr just deleate those records and add the ones below

your IP number can be found from you control panels "setup" tab

and all you have to do is at everydns.com add records

zozoliving.com A -> pointing to your servers ip from the plesk setup page
www.zozoliving.com A -> pointing to your servers ip
mail.zozoliving.com MX value 10 -> pointing to zozoliving.com

then back at open host

click all my domains tab in the left of the panel

click the domain regisration

edit the domain names checking the boxes to add records

ns1.everydns.net 208.76.56.56
ns2.everydns.net 204.152.184.150
ns3.everydns.net 208.96.6.143
ns4.everydns.net 64.158.219.3

then go to the DNS zone and click disable zone

Many thanks to idlearts for his help. Now I have a better idea of what I'm doing, and I have my site and email up and running using third party DNS from everydns.

luca, basically what I have ended up doing is reproducing my DNS table from my plesk panel at everydns (except for the entries that are listed as having type "NS" type).

THEN I turned of the DNS in my plesk panel, so all the existing values there disappear. And then, in my plesk panel, I created four new DNS entries, entering the four everydns name servers that they list at thier site, which your listed earlier.

But follow idlearts's advice. He knows way better than I do, plus my plesk panel is a little different (it's that ofmy new host, not Openhost).

Are above IP addresses the ones to use? I mean as you have posted these?

Hi Everyone, Steve from Openhost here.

I apologise to everyone affected by the international domain name outage this weekend.  The length of this outage has been very distressful for a large number of people.  Yesterday Enom disabled access to our account and changed the name servers for all the international domains (.com, .net, .org) so that their holding page was displayed instead of the correct web sites.  We have been unable to get a reason from Enom for why this action was taken.  They have told us we need to phone them Monday morning during US business hours.  We've made numerous phone calls them and asked them to escalate the issue to someone that can help us.  They've refused to do so and are now hanging up on us.  This has left us feeling very frustrated.

The account was not disabled for non-payment. We understand Enom disables domains from time to time when they are used in Phishing scams or Spam, but we'd expect if this was the case with some of our clients domains then only those domains would have been affected and we'd certainly expect to be notified.  Like the majority of New Zealand domain providers, we rely on International partners for Global domains.  We've learn't the hard way that we can't rely on Enom.

Once we have more information on what happened we will update the news on the front page of our web site.  We will be doing our utmost to ensure we are not vulnerable to outages like this in the future.

OK, something really weird just happened. I decided to set up third party DNS with everydns for my second site that I have hosted with openhost. I set up the entires at everyhost, and then I turned of DNS management in plesk, and entered the everyhost name servers, and then BANG, instead of seeing my normal site at www.podcastermusic.org, I saw a squatter site instead - at the same address.

Needless to say, I switched back straight away. What the hell?

We recently noticed our Enom account is active again.  We believe Enom have enabled it, but we have still not heard back from them.
Most global domains should be working again now or will be working again this evening.  In the case of podcastermusic.org it is using the openhost name server and is working correctly:

# dig podcastermusic.org

;podcastermusic.org.            IN      A

;; ANSWER SECTION:
podcastermusic.org.     3600    IN      A       202.89.57.14

;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
podcastermusic.org.     3600    IN      NS      ns3.openhost.net.nz.
podcastermusic.org.     3600    IN      NS      ns1.openhost.net.nz.
podcastermusic.org.     3600    IN      NS      ns2.openhost.net.nz.

Yes, I changed it back to the podcaster nameserver when I saw what happened when I used everydns.

Steve,
I do understand your frustrations trying to sort out the issue with eNom. However, it is just as frustrating for your customers (who are not IT specialist like me) not being served by a support desk. Apearently there was a workaround. With the help from the geekzone users we were able to get the site up and running again. It would have been great service if your support guys could have provided the information. We have unnecessarily been out of business for 34 hours.

Thanks Luca.  As far as we were aware there was no work around.  Access to the Openhost Enom account was locked, so any attempted changes e.g. changing the name servers to everydns.net should have resulted in an error.  That is certainly what we had experienced when trying to change settings.  If we'd known there was a way to use our locked account we definitely would have informed our clients.
