I get the crackle / pop sounds on both the speakers and System sounds when I adjust the sliders quickly. ie move the slider again before the windows confirmation sound completes. It's consistent.

My mobo is a Gigabyte GA-G41MT-D3, windows build 1909 18969.657, 32 bit version, 2GB ram.

It doesn't do anything other than play music (MediaMonkey), and surf the net/ YouTube.

I'll dig out a spare HDD, and try 1803 during the week.

I want to test with Win 10 1803 but unfortunately don't have a spare drive handy. If you could do that it would be very helpful. 😀

Win 10 1803 still had the same sound issues.

I have run the LatencyMon tool, lots of red so there is an issue there that needs further investigation. Ran out of time.

As this PC only has 2GB ram ( RAM was adequate in it's previous life as a Win7 point of sale), but I'll add in another 2GB.

The mobo isn't supported in Win10 either. No sound chip drivers, etc, available for Win10.

I could always drop back to Win7 on it. or Linux

I hate throwing away hardware that is still (semi) functional ...

Is there any 'gain' being added to compensate lower volume sounds? With a traditional audio system.... pop crackles appear when you are trying to over drive (amplify) the source sound

Maybe check the sound card settings for gain?

Also (if applicable / if you have separate amplified speakers), check the computer master volume is louder than the physical speaker controls (you want the source to be 'main driver' and not have the amplified speakers try to amplify a low signal)....

It's not a gain issue.

Isn't 1803 the version MS a scrapping/pulling down? I think I meant to ask if you could test 1809. I have a notebook with 1809 and it has no popping or crackling at all. If you have crackling in 1803 with high latency that may be your issue instead. I get the crackling with low latency and have very minimal latency spikes. I think this is an issue with what Microsoft thinks are 'applications sounds' in Win 10 1909 and maybe 1903. Anything 'application' seems to suffer from the crackling. See the Volume Mixer video I linked back in the thread. The Device doesn't crackle when playing the same Windows sound as the System Sound slider. 🤔

So any news on this? I have the exact same problem. Been having it over a year now but before it was manage-able since most of the games i play didn't have any problems.
I just learned to ignore it on other occassions... Except for now i'm having a it a lot.
Already did a clean install and also ran LatencyMon, which show no problems.

Also tried all the suggested solutions and stuff.....

Hiya Fdecisions.
I've given up trying to resolve this. Tried using a USB sound adapter as well. Still the same issue.

Added more RAM. Still the same.

I suspect my mobo is dated and probably not win10 compliant.

I can live with the occasional popping noise.

Or revert back to win7 if it gets too bothersome.

What is your sound setup? I gave the details of the issues over to a Creative Sound Blaster dev at their Reddit page and they said it would help the dev team investigate it. I need to follow up. That's the only news I have. Hopefully MS will fix it in the next feature update...

Same issue i think here, this is another post i made a bit ago. Hope this brings a bit more info to this annoying situation.

I recently got into Hifi and have heard something i cant unhear now. There is a faint "pop" sound that happens in certain games at what seems to be mainly load screens or when certain audio is generated in game. I know its not my audio gear as a have tried using the same gear before i upgraded and i still get the same issue, while also trying on a different PC playing the same game. It dosent seem to be in every game/app but here are a few: PUBG, R6 Siege, Resident Evil Revelations, Halo MCC and The outerworlds. PUBG is one that i never noticed before. The pop Happens Running in and out of the zone you will need a decent amount of volume or headphones to hear the pop, should be coming out from the left.

Gear I was using before this issue:

-PC: 2080ti/8700k/Asus z370-H/32gb/1tb M.2/ Windows 10 x64

-Dac/amp/Headphone: Fiio k3/HD 660 S running balanced

Gear im using with the issue:

-PC: Same as before

-Dac/amp/Headphone: Geshelli labs enog 2 Dac (using SPDIF)/ Drop THX 789/ HD 660 S running balanced XLR

Troubleshooting ive tried, didnt help:

-Did a full recovery and reinstalled windows

-Updated ASUS UEFI Bios

-Updated All drivers using Driver booster 7 Pro on steam.

-Updated to most recent GPU Drivers, then reverted back to earlier drivers.

- Uninstalled all audio software related to asus/mobo (Sound engine Realtek audio)

-Used a different dac (SMSL SU-8) just to see if optical was the issue.

-Used the fiio K3, Same pop, same games, which i never noticed before.

-Used 6 different headphones and a couple speakers

-Used fiio k3 on my Laptop, same games same pop

-Disabled all sound effects in windows for the optical out and speaker out.

- Disabled "Cstates" in the bios

- Took off any over clocks i have on my PC, setting all to default.

-Ran Latencymon, stayed green.

-Followed along with a few fourms tinkering with the audio and power management in the registery

- changed audio bitrate/depth to: 16/44, 16/48, 24/96, 24/192

- Tried line in to the front of the PC

-Contacted microsoft and they told me to run "DISM.EXE" in cmd prompt, some command to repair windows.

-uninstalled a couple recent updates to windows 10

That's all the trouble shooting i could come up with, sorry for the long list. The only thing my 2 PCs have in common is Manufacturer and windows build. Is this a game issue that i never noticed before? It dosent seem to happen when it matters in game, and i can listen to music without the pop. I still would really like to know why its happening in the first place. Maybe im just listening harder now that i have a better headphone. I wasnt playing the same exact games (except r6 siege) with the before gear, so maybe the pop was always there. Please watch the Video and notice when i go in and out of the blue shield the pop happens when the audio is done playing, its the same sound in the other games more or less. Thanks for reading.

Is anybody with Windows 1903 or 1909 experiencing loud crackle pops in their Windows sounds? When I go to control panel/sound/sounds tab and play back the Windows scheme .wav files I get loud pops on each file. It's most noticeable when repeatedly clicking the test button. I am trying to determine whether this is a sound issue with Windows or my machine. I have a notebook with Win 10 1803 installed and there no pops at all. I have freshly installed Windows 10 1909 today and the popping is still there. It is there with the motherboard's sound card, my Sound Blaster sound card and the Nvidia HD audio through my monitor speakers.

There is some talk of popping sound being an issue since Win 10 1903 was released but I can't find anything official. Does anybody know if this is indeed a sound issue with the latest Windows 10? It would be very helpful to hear from other users, pulling this machine apart for naught is no fun...

It started to happen to me. In the past (1903), it only affected the volume mixer, that's all. Now, after the 1909 updates, it affects everything, when I start or pause videos, in games, music, apps, discord and more... The hardware change does not fix, the formatting does not fix and even previous versions Windows 10 does not work, the problem persists. It even has a "grainy sound" that you can hear from time to time... This affects all P2, P3 and USB sound devices on my PC. I would really like to know what Windows 10 did...

This is a Windows problem, to be sure, but I think the only way to fix it, is to wait for a Microsoft solution...
