davidcole:

I've been looking at protonmail, fastmail and mailbox.org.  The latter being the front runner so far for pricing, features and storage (10gb vs 15), custom domain and catch-all.  But I'll have to consolidate down some accounts to aliases as I was a bit greedy in g suites and had 14 accounts for various things.

I use Zoho mail. It gives you aliases and works well for a reasonable price.

@nickb800:

Can't say I'm surprised - I knew a day of reckoning would come. Quite a jump from $0 to $324 per year though (3 users @ $9 per month).

Will probably look to extract the other two users (family) from the Google ecosystem - I'm too far gone myself.

That's $9+GST

So I’ve been doing some work with a spare domain and a Microsoft 365 family trial ($165 a year for up to six accounts).

You can get a personalised domain through godaddy, but with a bit of Reddit help I managed to do it with cloudflare.

Im just tying to work out the catch all part and multiple domains.

while dearer in someways I feel more comfortable with Microsoft than some of these small email players

@Batman:

i see that microsoft is a bit cheaper but with 1TB and you get office. do you know how many emails one MS Subs gives? with google workspace i get 30 emails with one sub.

(PS i like gmail app but despise outlook app :(

Are you talking Microsoft 365 For Home? Those include Microsoft Accounts (hotmail, live, outlook) but not your own domain. You have to use Microsoft 365 Business which is a bit more expensive.

What about Microsoft 365 Family?  $165 a year for up to 6 users, 50gb storage though.....and I'm trying to work out if you have to have your custom domains through godaddy

No custom domain on Microsoft 365 Family. You have to use Microsoft 365 Business which is just a bit more expensive. These comes with Office applications. Microsoft Office 365 Exchange Online is cheaper but does not have the Office applications

Where did you see the option for custom domain for Microsoft 365 Family?

Also @davidcole "No, Outlook.com currently does not support DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) or Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance (DMARC)."

And emails come "from outlook.com address on behalf of <custom domain>"

no you actually can.  And they have built in support for a godaddy domain. If you click on get personalised email on your family plan it takes you to a godaddy page.    And based off that url you can use other dns servers.

See reference here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Office365/comments/ft15pk/use_personalized_domain_with_outlook_and_office/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

I definitely did this on family.   Not office 365 exchange 1 plan

Thjanks, yes I remember now and posted something above. The problem is that this is limited to the number of accounts in the Family package - so if you need more accounts too bad. You can create aliases but not more users. Also the note above about "email sent by outlook.com on behalf of..."

@freitasm yeah not sure about the dkim thing if it impacts me.

yes Microsoft is limited to six accounts, and still may not be suitable for me as I have more than one custom domain.

I am thinking of using cloudflare email which can do routing. Catch all and may give me the ability to consolidate multiple domains.  Which I could then drop to a free gmail/outlook.com address anyway.  As long as I can send as.  But my sending requirements are fairly simple

I am also still contemplating mailbox.org which supports catchall and multiple domains out of the box.   At 3 euro per account per month.    But no word/excel with that which is a bit of a bonus with Microsoft

Anyway, I think people in this thread should be aware that if they have a custom domain with their Google Suite account they are in a world of hurt if they try to move away while keeping things like "Login with Google" and Android apps working...

i have another domain I might play with for a mailbox.org trial.

I just want email.  Not too fussed by calendar and contacts.  I recently moved those to a self hosted Nextcloud anyway.

I have figured out a workable solution for me.

Pay Google. Sad but true. $9 (+gst) per month is kinda crazy for a service from a company where they already take so much in terms of information - but they offer no option to migrate to Gmail, and even the idea of losing all my auth / apps / google docs etc is painful.

I also figured it would taken dozens of hours to migrate and get everything working on another platform plus I really really like the way their ecosystem works. It's too much money for a single email account but they are calling the shots here and I feel like I basically have no workable option that won't cost a LOT of time.

I will look to move away slowly over time and change auth etc as things pop up or I notice them to reduce this reliance - but there's no guarantee FB won't do this in a year or 2...

Cheers - N
