Also in the market because of Drobo.

Historically had QNAP 4-bays, and aside from bloat-galore, move them on due to the security concerns and lack of security updates/OS updates.

Heard nothing but constant recommendations for Synology.

Do they really keep the software up to date and secure beyond 3 years?! That goes against the prebuilt model of keep upgrading every few years.

Have been considering rolling my own and running TrueNas as some recommended but am seriously struggling to find a good case with hot swap front drives bays.

Open to recommendations on NAS-style cases if anyone has any?

I had a DS 210 for about 10 years and it was still receiving updates till I sold it. Not the latest and greatest OS as later DS hardware had advanced beyond the 210's capability but the legacy OS's were kept updated as were the app packages.

Nothing but praise for synology

Thanks everyone for your input.

I have opted for the DS1621+.

I did look at the DS1621xs+ but really can't justify the extra $1000.

The plain + will probably be better than the Drobo, and at the end of the day that should be good enough.

I'm going to presume that the DS1621+ will wipe the data off the Drobo drives, and that I'll be spending the first week copying the data on to it from the Drivepool backup.

Yay it's here!

Do I have to put disks in before I do anything else?

It's been a while since I've set up a Syno box but if I recall correctly, DSM installs itself onto the disks during setup (so, yes, it needs disk)

hmm yes, that was a RTFM moment, sorry.

Needs at least 1 disk.

omg the setup is asking hard questions.

What RAID level :

SHR
SHR-2
RAID1
RAID5
RAID6
RAID10
Basic
JBOD
RAID0

I have inserted 5*8TB, and 1 slot spare to add another 8TB disk to increase the array capacity.

What would be the best level to pick that wont stuff up adding a drive later?

The Drobo gave me about 29GB and I was using about 24GB.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

https://www.synology.com/en-nz/support/RAID_calculator?hdds=8%20TB|8%20TB|8%20TB|8%20TB|8%20TB

can play with the drives and see what happens with adding more drives and what space things give you along with the different raid types

SHR/raid 5 (similar) will give you one drive for protection and the rest as space. adding an extra drive wont change this.

Don't get fooled into thinking some of those RAID levels provide security - remember that all those disks are in the same unit, in the same house, on the same tectonic plate.

Well, that tectonic plate comment may have been a bit over the top.  😏

I've been using SHR on a DS918 quite happily with 4*4TB for several years. Agree with comment above though. You're providing redundancy in case of drive failure - not security.

from one of the posts in the thread

"All data on the Drobo was replicated using Filesync to a Win10PC running Drivepool."

I see, with SHR I can gradually replace the 8TBs with bigger ones and the capacity will gradually increase as that happens, whereas with RAID5 the increased capacity can only be realised once all disks are replaced. SHR sounds quite similar to the drive management I found so attractive in the Drobo.

One question I haven't seen the answer to yet:

Why are there 4 LAN ports on the back?

Yikes 21 hours to create the volume, I guess that's where the extra $1k would have come in handy. 😀
