Thanks all for the thoughts and advice. I think I'll order that Brother mfcl3770cdw I linked to in the first post, as I do want a laser printer not an inkjet, and the other mentioned while good don't quite do what I want at a price I want to pay. Double sided scanning would be a time saver. Any other thoughts or advice are still welcome.

We are very happy with our Brother MFC-9340CDW purchased May 2016 and has only used 7221 pages.

The four cartridges are usually replaced two yearly (approx) from Tech Warehouse. The last cost was $459.62 for all 4. These are genuine brother cartridges, not refills and Tech Warehouse we have found to be the cheapest.

Here is your proposed model on their site: https://techwarehouse.co.nz/search/?q=Brother+MFCL3770CDW

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Thanks all that's very useful.

@Scott3 that sounds very positive :) The Brother laser printers seem to Just Work. Does Brother still use the old Control Centre 4 for scanning? The downloads suggest they do. It works but it's pretty ugly. I could go third party but I never found an app that was worth paying for.

...

Pritty much, in my experience, brother printers do seem to just work. I have owned many of them (got my first cira 2005), and have only once needed to take one in for a warranty repair. We have done a heap of printing too (spouse's notes through law school etc).

Quite a different experience to the high end cannon injet we had when we got our first brother.

Never seen a reason to switch brands.

But I do hate how much packaging they use (both on the printers & consumables).

And how their pricing structure encourages waste. With their cheaper B+W lazer printer's, it is cheaper to by an entire printer, than it is to buy a replacement drum. As such we have never replaced a drum, instead buying a new printer when approaching the end of drum life. (did mean we were able to upgrade features too, getting one with a auto duplexer, rather than manaully duplexing was a big win for ease of use).

It has both CC4, and iPrint and scan. Havn't tried the later.

CC4 is a but clunky, but gets the job done.

Often I scan directly with PDFexchange Editor, which is the low cost knock off of adobe acrobat that we use. (mostly have it for merging, splitting pdf files etc).

Handle9 I've had four inkjet printers (Canon and Epson) back when I needed to print on DVDs probably 10-15 years ago now, and I was printing documents quite regularly about six months a year. I found that when we didn't print for a while they end up blocked and eventually getting thrown out. The laser printer the past 8 years has been a much, much better experience, other than us not replacing the parts that wore out. How long have you had your Ecotank? Any thoughts on their reputation for blocking? I'm unlikely to get an inkjet, but I'm interested.

I’ve had mine 2 years. Zero issues but it does get used regularly. Saying that we’ve gone on holiday for 3 weeks and had no issues printing when we got back.

YMMV but I’d buy another tomorrow, especially with the quality of photo prints.

I've had the Brother mfcl3770cdw for well over a year now and for the most part its been great!  The only issue is that I've never been able to get other than genuine Brother replacement toners to work, the printer just refuses to see them.  BUT, not to be out done, now all I do is take the chip from a genuine Brother toner and replace it for the one on the none genuine toner, reset the toner count and off we go.  Have done this several time now and had no issues.

I've order the Brother 3770CDW from Warehouse Stationary, price matched to the cheapest place on pricespy.

Interesting - can you link to a page you found the instructions for this, or how you do it? I tend to use genuine toner as I'm so low volume the cost isn't important and you get a longer warranty, but outside the warranty I might give them a go.

watch this vid.

How to reset Toner Cartridge Brother MFC-L3710 3730 3750 - YouTube

The chip swap is very simple, and all that's needed is a Philips screwdriver to remove the 1 screw holding the chip cage to the toner.

Nice, thanks. I read on Amazon reviews that a new firmware for the printer disables that feature, though as it's just from reading a review that may not be correct.
