restecp: Had a think about it. Currently I use handbreak to convert some of my content to H.265 so the extra cores will be useful.

use a GPU to do that, way way faster

Smart people pick the best core i5 of the current Gen and invest the savings in the graphics card.

I just upgraded from 12700kf to 13700kf and I am blown away. It's noticeably quicker.

NVENC is good but I definitely feel I get better results with CPU encoding.

That's just a single generation. I was genuinely blown away at how much faster this was.

I know, I can't recall the last time I saw this much of an increase in a single generation.

If this is what you are set on.
I would go the 13700K over the 13900K.

And spend the difference if you are willing to spend it towards a better GPU or monitor if your purpose is gaming.

The reasoning behind this is you are probably not gonna make a 13700k struggle or run at peak much. So the 13900K is a bit of a waste. And more games would be GPU bound, since you are running the latest gen Intel, your best bet at squeezing out more gaming performance is a better GPU or a nicer monitor.

if gaming, i would go around 600s, so if only considering a 13900k or 13700k, go with 13700k.   its not worth the frames per dollar difference.   spend that extra money on a better m.2 or a better gpu.

if youre doing some heavy cpu load stuff, runnings vms etc, then sure 13900k.  but gaming, its not worth it.  waste of money

Current state I haven't really had time for games with the birth of my daughter 2 years ago, but I see myself gaining more and more time to be able to play.

This is the funniest thing I've read on Geekzone in a long time! The older kids get the more time they need! Babies sleep all the time, toddlers need constant attention. My son is six, I expect to have basically no free time until he's a teenager.

Maybe a year ago I upgraded from an Intel 2600K to a Ryzen 5600X, ten years newer. I don't game. It's a bit faster, real world. Video encoding completes more quickly, though given I can leave it overnight doesn't really matter. Video editing and photo editing is a bit quicker with high megapixel cameras.

I might upgrade again in another ten years. Gamers might notice bigger gains.

In reality, I don't usually with this machine either, though it's more than capable. The stuff I have noticed is just general computing.

I was a little underwhelmed by my 8700k to 12700k upgrade. It was noticeable but not as much as I expected. This feels a bit more noticeable for whatever reason.

I game only occasionally on this one, and noticed a dramatic improvement in going from an 8600K to a 13600K, mainly in opening and using large programs that are constantly sifting through large data sets.

Gaming? Pretty much no discernible difference, given that the video card (2060) is the same as before.

That's what I thought as my daughter was approaching her second birthday, then my wife went and had another baby five days before that milestone.

And then the same thing happened again two years later... I sold my graphics card.

Just an anecdote...
