Bung: Why wouldn't the firewall also affect ethernet or any other wifi source that the pc can make the connection on?

Windows may use a different firewall profile for each network it detects and makes a decision on. Turning off the firewall (for a period) just eliminates all that as a factor.

Good point, good idea. Unfortunately it didn't seem to make any difference. Firewall off, firewall on, it works the same.

Gordy7:

Your ipconfig /all looks pretty good.

From a wired computer when you look inside your router do you see the Lenovo as a connected WiFi device?

How about an old school sledge hammer test and turn off every WiFi device except your router and Lenovo WiFi and see what happens.

Yeah the router and Pi Hole (which does DHCP) both see the laptop.

Interestingly, the Fritzbox shows the old VPN that I used to use on the same IP address as the IP the laptop is using. That VPN isn't active and hasn't been in ages. I was wondering if there was an IP conflict. I don't think there is, but it's odd... I might see if I can work out how to delete that old VPN...

Solved! Pi Hole was handing out an IP address using DCHP that was already allocated to an old unused VPN on the Fritzbox. When I did a find in the Fritzbox network section the dual use became obvious quite quickly. I deleted it and everything started working immediately. That also explains why today I could ping the pi hole but not the router.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I wouldn't have discovered this without all the ideas and tips from everyone here. @Gordy7 it was your tip that most directly led me to the solution 🙂

As is often the case the solution involves something never mentioned before in the thread.

If I knew that too start with there wouldn't have been a problem or a thread! IP address conflict was the answer. IPv4 not working was a good clue.

I probably forgot to explicitly say I use pi hole at the beginning though. I mentioned it in a later post. It was a process of elimination to decide what was relevant.

How did the VPN config etc mean that only one site wouldn't work but others would?

I mean it was obviously the solution which is great but I still don't understand how it was only that one website?

I think it was that sites that work on IPv6 worked, IPv4 didn't. I just didn't test many sites and the ones I did all had IPv6.
