Maybe the old system doesn't have the 3.3v pin enabled on the SATA power connector. Could try tape over pin 3 on the power connector on the drive.

 

 

did this and it worked

Thanks for updating - stoked you got it working.

 

Pretty amazing that it worked despite the extent of the damage to the SATA data connector - I can see why you assumed that was the issue!
