Well that's been quite a journey.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Upon realising that the wall socket itself is proud of the wall by the depth of the skirting board, any plug would have to be 0mm thick to allow the bookcase to remain hard up against the wall.

Recessed sockets etc deemed too much faffing.

So.... we're going to cut a hole in the bookcase!

There are several books with "Hidden power" in their titles you can hide it with.
