Do you know what resolution and refresh rate the monitor is?

GPU usually depends on target output and type of games you play

Its pretty crappy, its basically this one except the curved model (couldn't find a link for the curved model)

https://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/p/veon-27-inch-monitor/R2827699.html

Says 75Hz

I assume this monitor will be replaced by the teen as they save up, so I should assume that it will be a good one eventually.    If you have any tips on a good monitor that would be really helpful.

1080P and 75Hz you could quite easily get a higher spec PC and a low spec graphics card and upgrade the graphics card later when you upgrade the monitor.

Or you could get a new monitor, you can get a entry level 1080P monitor for $200-300 which would be 160+Hz and would still look good.

The yukon pre-built linked by jase is a good start and fits with the current monitor.

If you do get a better monitor at 1440p resolution I would +1 jases’s comment about getting a 4070 or higher.

There’s an elephant in the room because on Jan 7th or so the next gen GPU’s are going to get announced. The current GPU’s are already 2 years old except for Intel’s B580 (which is good if you can find it here).

So what does that mean re the new generation graphics card ? Will the existing ones get cheaper? Or should we wait to get the more modern tech?

Maybe and to see how they preform compared to the existing generation and if you get more performance for your $

If considering a pre-built or custom-built, have a look at Playtech.
They custom-built a gaming PC for me early this year, after I was looking at a pre-built by them, but realised the GPU would not maximise my gaming monitor (34" 144Hz). Was about $100 more.

A little bit of everything. The price will change to match the next gen performance level, stock of previous gen that does not sell well will dry up (because small nz market). Next gen will release with extra features, at least for nvidia who is leading the market with AI tech. For the GPU it is worth to wait this close to the announcement. The only safe option for performance at this moment is likely Intel’s B580 GPU released recently.

CPU’s are relatively simple in comparison, at most you would consider AMD’s X3D line. Intel CPU’s are not doing so hot, 13/14th generation had stability issues, the most recent ultra line also doesn’t perform as well.

Is building one tricky for a complete novice and/or young teenager, and perhaps related is it easy to damage something while installing it making the risk on us bricking something outweigh the upsides.

Total novice, so bear that in mind.

Easy as putting Lego together. The harder part, mostly PSU and motherboards is knowing cheap components from quality components.

Good quality 2nd hand PSU's with 10yr warranty, you can find at bargain prices, then maybe a premium 2nd hand motherboard from ASUS (only ASUS) will last years, Vs new cheap shit.

SSD's from Samsung are bulletproof, last forever.

First builds are generally a mix of new and used components, unless money is no issue.

We need to get a gaming / school computer for a member of the household.

If it is for school then get the cheapest laptop or a chromebook if that is all the school needs. If it is taken to school it is going to get stolen, lost, damaged, broken, infected with malware or corrupted.

For gaming, find out if the member's friends are using PlayStation or Xbox and get one to match what their friends use.

The new nvidia cards have been announced. The 5070 ti is looking to be the most promising in terms of performance for value. AMD however was supposed to announce their next gen but haven’t yet.

In somewhat if a surprise, nvidia also announced most of their DLSS4 feature improvements will come to 4000 series as well. If you do manage to snag one for cheap you won’t be missing out as much.
