I am still running an i7 8700 non k with a 7900xtx and i am still getting a solid 60fps at 4k.
So i would only recommend cpu upgrade if you are not hitting the fps you want.
My cpu is bottlenecking my gpu but its hitting my max frame rate, so i am not too worried.
60fps in what tho? I have a 144hz 4k monitor
BG3 and GW2 etc are more cpu intensive games, I dont mind capping a 50x0 card if I upgrade the system late and reuse but I dont want to upgrade the graphics card and see hardly any improvement because of a cpu bottleneck.
Only game i wasnt hitting solid 60fps without raytracing was Starfield.
Cyberpunk and BG3 were solid and pretty much every other game i threw at it.
If you want to do 4k and go higher than 60fps, then yeah CPU will matter a bit
Hardware unboxed did a good 4k cpu look very recently.

SpartanVXL: I did this, I had a 3700x and 2070 super in 2019 before covid prices came in. Then in late 2022 upgraded to 5800x3d and 4090.
It’s worth it because the 3700x suffered from CCX latency, and my one also sucked with max clocks enough that I regretted not getting the 3800x.
I can’t see anywhere with 5800x3d anymore or even the 5700x3d in stock, you can get the 5700x3d from amazon AU however from AMD as the seller.
5700X3D are also available from Aliexpress from sellers with excellent reviews and large numbers of sales for between $300 and $350.
FWIW I've bought a fair amount of PC parts from Aliexpress with good results. YMMV of course but it is certainly worth considering.
networkn:SpartanVXL: Corsair HX750 is fine. 5070ti is in the sweet spot right now for how much card you get for the $. It will later be the super models that refresh the line in a year or so.
Take your pick, but go for the 5700x3d if you want a quick boost to min fps and mmo or strategy game performance. Otherwise you’ll need to move to am5 which may be better value in a year or two if they release another x3d sku.
Forgot to mention, ram performance still helps with x3d, try to have 3600MHz memory if you can. Also check SoC voltage if you do as some motherboard can overvolt the SoC at 3600MHz profiles, it should be in the 1.1-1.15v range.
If you have 3000/3200MHz no biggie, dont bother and save the money for ddr5 when you upgrade later.I am prepared to bet $5 that without a benchmark, there isn't a human who can tell the difference between 3200 and 3600 memory speed in a computer.
If you are buying new, perhaps, but you'd never upgrade from 3200 to 3600.
Worth noting you can get deals on aliexpress sometimes for the 5700x3d particularly when they have coupons.
I paid $150 usd for my Ryzen 7 7700.
looks like about $300ish on aliexpress for a 5700x3d seems worthwhile upgrade over scraping the whole system so long as it wont be holding the rest back

so it looks like a 5700x3d w 4080 gives a 50-100% uplift in games which seems decent for a $300 update

Yeah they are very nice for the price best in AM4 for gaming.
I went AM5 because fast memory is better for my use cases as well as AVX512.
ok looks like my mb bios (which for some gigabyte being absolute garbage reason, I cant update) will run the 5700x3d
I think I will have to tinker with windows drivers etc to get the x3d scheduling working etc?
Ah true thats good
I am sure it can but where do I get one from?
