If I have to, I may resort to the workaround thing, but only if I cant find a mobo+cpu+ram at a price that doesnt make me cry.

Or it all gets too hard.

How will I know if a mobo has TPM2?

8th gen and newer have a management engine TPM implementation that most updated bioses will enable for you, no need for the dedicated one unless you want the more advanced stuff

Yes the SSD prob would boot, but for best performance with any major hardware change, you're best to do a clean install so it installs all the correct drivers etc and not hit conflicts with any of the old system.

We do clones to dissimilar hardware day in and day out and have no issues. Yes, you have to uninstall a few utilities that come with original drivers sometimes, but 10 minutes work compared to a reconfiguration of the whole system is way better.

Why not consider a Win 11 certified ex business desktop? I bought a Dell 3060 desktop from  Here:

https://nzpcclearance.co.nz/product-category/dell/dell-pcs/?max_price=904

This is what I bought a couple of years ago but it is much cheaper now at $379.

Worth thinking about.

I have a PCI LSI SAS2008 card which wont fit in those teeny weeny cases.

Though I have considered buying one to rip the guts out of.

Everything ends up propitiatory in those small machines. Things like 12v power supplies with a small weird connector on them, and the 5v for HDDs coming from the header and the motherboard having the regulation for it. I think even the standby power on some of the HPs I have seen was 12v from the PSU. Nothing swappable with normal PCs. Even the looks like ATX sized backplanes are just part of the case and not removable, so cant transfer to another case.

Looks like you'll be able to enroll into first year of Windows 10 ESU just by logging in using a personal Microsoft Account or using Bing search engine.

https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2025/06/24/stay-secure-with-windows-11-copilot-pcs-and-windows-365-before-support-ends-for-windows-10/

Today, we're introducing additional free enrollment options and the simple steps to get started.

Extended Security Updates for Windows 10:

For individuals: An enrollment wizard will be available through notifications and in Settings, making it easy to enroll in ESU directly from your personal Windows 10 PC. Through the enrollment wizard, you’ll be able to choose from three options:

-Use Windows Backup to sync your settings to the cloud—at no additional cost..
-Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points—at no additional cost..
-Pay $30 USD (local pricing may vary).

You can bet someone on github will have a tool that you can run and it will grab all the "paid for" Extended support updates for Win 10

I stayed on Windows 7 for ages with a similar too.

So it looks like mini-itx mobos of the Win11 supported variety are a bit thin on the ground, especially in my price range.

Will now consider the workaround.

Hopefully, something suitable may show up in the next 12 months or so.

Well that didnt last long.

Have sourced a A520i AC mobo and AMD 5 3400G CPU.

Will reuse my DDR4 RAM and M2 SSD (Win10Pro digital license).

Nothing actually installed yet, waiting for the parts to arrive.

So I can pre-fret about the next stage while I wait.

Maybe, everything will just work by inserting the M2, Win10 will boot, and I can upgrade to Win11.

Maybe not.

In which case, clean install of Win11. Should I still use the Rufus method suggested earlier?

How likely is it that after the install and I log in with my Microsoft account, that the digital license will be applied?

Am I probably going to have to purchase a Win11 license?

So many questions!

Intel to AMD you’ll need to install and bunch of stuff like chipset drivers etc. might encounter some funny issues.

You will need to re-activate as it is a core hardware change. If you have the licence attach to your account then it should work, just gi through the options around hardware change. If it doesn’t then call or open a ticket and say your kit kicked the bucket and you got replacement parts.

From there just run the win11 upgrade or installer.
