Recently tried https://kagi.com/ was pleasantly surprised how good it was, not sure if I am willing to subscribe though - thinking about it.

Yea this is how I feel - it seems _wrong_ to pay for search.

DDG is Ok, but the name is just so stupid I can't get past it.  I bet they'd have 20 times the marketshare if they hadn't picked such a stupid name.  If its search was as good as Kagi's I'd probably use it, but it's not.

I've also got my own private SearxNG instance I use sometimes, but it's slow.  Kagi is fast and just works. I'm going to see how I go on the $5USD a month plan.

LTT did quite a good video about this last year. Most of the de-googling ends up being a compromise between getting rid of Google, and convenience. Everyone's threshold is different.

They did a follow up one that Google had removed because it went in to bypassing YouTube adverts. Pretty sure you can find it elsewhere, they definitely left it up on floatplane. I'm slowly working through the services to self host with some kind of back up to degooglefy as much as possible.

The one referenced here is the one you're talking about - it covers separate (non-browser solutions) ways of watching YouTube here. I've used FreeTube in the past, but Vivaldi with uBlock Origin still gets rid of all the ads without having to open a separate app, so I just keep it as a backup for when they tweak the code to bork uBlock Origin.

DuckDuckGo is good, Bing these days is also OK (which is what DuckDuckGo uses I'm pretty sure).

Turns out it's quite hard to come up with good name for your service!

From Wikipedia: The company's name is a reference to the children's game duck, duck, goose. "Weinberg explained the beginnings of the name with respect to the children's game duck, duck, goose. He said of the origin of the name: "Really it just popped in my head one day and I just liked it. It is certainly influenced/derived from duck duck goose, but other than that there is no relation, ..."
