shiroshadows: I don't use any anti-virus software.

Don't any of you find it lowers the performance of your computers?

Yep, until I had to spend a week untangling the mess when I finally got stung.  Now it's MSSE, as it's the only package I found that would get rid of the rootkit that defied all other packages.

Common Sense + Linux.
Awesome combo, I would recommend it.

Nod32, avast, avg, norton at home (with malwarebytes)

Trend Officescan at work (with malwarebytes)

I use to use Trend at home but it was too much of a system hog.

Is MSSE the security package that MS are about to release to small business, ie less than 10 workstations? We currently use Trend Micro Worry Free but it is a huge resource hog.

Edit: Answer yes, I noticed it on the MSSE site.

Microsoft Security Essentials. Also use it secretly at work to fix problems our official software can't.

Kaspersky Pure on home PCs, AVG and Symantec EndPoint Protection at work. I scored a free licence for Kaspersky thanks to GZ, not wholly impressed with it though. Scanning makes the computer unusable. A lot of the proactive features also caused resource havoc. Software seems buggy and unresponsive. Will be switching to MSE at some stage.

Bitdefender Total security 2010. Bitdefender hates everything, nothing will get pass this scanner. Even comes with a Parent Control and if you have children using the pc its worth having, blocks porn sites/violence/ you name it. Abit hungry on resources yet comes with a Game mode option.

My primary machines are Macs now, but prior to switching (and in my Windows VMs) I used Microsoft Security Essentials. I used to be a big proponent of AVG, but my previous Windows desktop got a really nasty infection while using it. I know no AV software is 100% failsafe, but that was enough to prompt me to try something else. I found MSE had received pretty good reviews online, and it doesn't seem to tax the OS too much.

We used to use AVG or Avast for the free AV software but the latest versions of both are much slower than they used to be so now use MSSE.

For paid AV software we use NOD32.
We see far too many machines through the workshop, or in the field, with the likes of Nortons, McAfee, and Trend that say the machine is clean but the machine is running very slow and doing strange things.
Remove the existing AV, install NOD32 and run a scan and it picks up 3-4 viruses and the machines run so much better.

hellonearthisman: I use NOD32 and don't find it a resource hog.

+1. Have used NOD32 for years and it's great.

On my home PC I've switched from AVG free to MSE and pretty happy with that.

At work we recently switched to Kaspersky. In terms of detection it does the job and the central install/admin/update features are pretty good.
