Pretty sure that is the TCase and he will be measuring core temp.

As long as the CPU isn't throttling down and the system is stable, 80C at the core is hot, but not unsustainably so...

Lol, Looked at the wrong line of text. Thermal design is 92 deg?

What is an aftermarket cooler??

A third-party fan or cooling system for your CPU to replace the basic one Intel bundle with the processor.

Essential for overclocking (which you won't be able to do with that CPU) or if you are running hard in a warm environment, but with decent airflow through your case and running the CPU at stock speeds in a ventilated room, you probably don't need to worry about it IMHO. If the case airflow quality or environmental temperature are a concern, then it might be worth considering.

I will probably just go for windows 7 as it is cheaper and more than most of all my IT friends tell me never to go near windows 8 and just wait for 9?

I agree with the others - buy Windows 8.1 Pro now and run with it. If you disable Metro, it is fine as an OS and will serve you better in the long run. As others have said, if your friend desperately wants to run W7 you can always downgrade with your 8.1Pro license.

Very over budget, would i reduce the graphics card if he is not willing to spend that much? or cut costs in other places?

If you want to save some cash here but still get near-GTX780 performance, consider the ATI R9 280x at around $450 Yes, some games still favour NVIDIA over ATI...and vice versa and ATI don't seem to be quite on the ball with drivers as much as NVIDIA, but you get more performance for your money.

Sounds about right!

I have a 4790k running at 4500Ghz with a Frio cooler (one fan only) and if I thrash the nuts off it in some of the harsher artificial benches, it hits the 80s...

IRL it rarely pushes past 60C or so (more usually around 45C for gaming and idles at 23C or so) and perhaps more tellingly, it has never demonstrated instability or clocked down even at the higher core temps during extended testing.

Unless you are wilfully smashing too much voltage through the thing, they should always clock down before they run at temperatures considered damaging.

That said, compared to the good old 2500k the Haswells do run damn hot - I guess that is the price to pay for smaller and smaller die sizes!

Agree with Item on the video card. Whilst I found ATI Terrible for drivers and switched to NVIDIA, bang for buck that R9-280X is excellent.

My Nvidia 660Ti had mega driver issues, Would always bluescreen.

Yah like with AV Vendors, Video Card vendors seem to have on and off years, but it would take a fair bit to get me back to ATI now, unless they fixed their ongoing issues and were better performing (price regardless.)

My card seems to get hot. I kinda stopped caring tho.

You probably don't need a CPU cooler if you're not overclocking, the stock one will be fine

Some stock coolers do damn well (and others dont) - so if you do start overclocking, stick with the standard one, and if things start heating up, then look at a 3rd party cooler.

The CPU I'm getting will overclock to almost 4.5Ghz on its standard cooler with no issues - dont think I'd be pushing it beyond 4.0Ghz myself, just to keep things safe ;)

Thanks swapped out the cpu cooler for a cheaper one, still feel like he needs one if he decides to over heat his room and play BF4 at the same time

Make it the 212 evo instead of the regular one as its cheaper and I don't think many places would stock the regular one anyway
