Hey all

I have a friend which is looking to build his first gaming computer, i am not good at picking parts with budget in mind but i can get friends of mine to build it for him so i am sweet with that prospect...

He is looking to play BF4 at least on high to ultra and some other newer games, his budget is $2000 and is not including a monitor, keyboard, mouse and headset. This will be used for mainly gaming

http://www.mightyape.co.nz/product/NZXT-Phantom-410-Crafted-Mid-Tower-Case-Red/21723694 this is the case he wants (blue)

Can anyone help pick parts on that budget?

I'm going to noob myself past judgement

  • I5
  • 8GB Ram 1600Mhz+
  • 250Gb SSD, 2TB storage
  • Nvidia 750+
  • 650W of power +
  • Dont worry about case, Just an standard ITX.
  • No CD Drive. install windows via USB
  • Get some fans and a CPU cooler. Spend no more than 100 on the lot.

That will play BF4 on High to Ultra if your lucky. The SSD will be the biggest difference in BF4, 15 seconds loading Vs. 1-2 minutes. BF4 likes RAM so get a high clock rate, Maybe 1800Mhz and 8GB if you can afford it. GPU you want to be OK, Dont spend more than $550 on the graphics card. Dont spend more than $200 on the motherboard, Stick to Gigabyte for the lower end as generally more equipped than an ASUS in that price range.

Good recommendation, exactly what I would have said as well.

agreed, i wouldnt bother spending $250 on a case myself, and use the extra money on a better cpu/gfx card.

i picked up the zalman z1 case for $55 ish the other week.  nice enough looking case, certainly isnt super strong, but perfectly good for $55 and I rather spend the $200 on a better graphics card.

Add a Ti on the end of it :) But a 750 will do. I just saw his 2k budget and a 760TI would be next if he doesn't splash on a case.

pro tip:  use pricespy.co.nz and make a list of all the parts, you can then share a link to the list and also take your smartphone into pbtech etc and get them to price match everything on that list :)

Samsung 850 pro SSD is out, $300 instead of $200 though. Should last a bit longer but the standard 840 is no slouch.

I wouldn't buy fans with LEDs in them. Annoying to me, but maybe not to a gamer.

Yeah, I am a gamer and i always got glare from my LED fans. They distract me from my screen too. I snipped all the LED wires in the end.

At the time i can always switch out the led fans for something else otherwise does it all go well together? There is enough in the budget to switch out the ssd for the one noted above

Thanks for the help guys

I'd look at a Seasonic Platinum PSU, they are very efficient and highly rated. I believe whatever the extra cost, you would see it back eventually. The 850 SSD is nice.

Well the motherboard says LGA1150 and the processor says LGA1155 so I'd probably want to look into that, plus the processor is out of stock. This CPU would work better, it's compatible with the MB and is newer. There are a range of i5 CPUs though so have a look here.

Yup, Stick to seasonic. Invest in a PSU more than a Case. I run a platinum 850W

That motherboard supports M.2 Onboard Connector for SSD. If you got a compatible SSD it would be a bit faster, but maybe more expensive and not easy to move to other computers.

Memory support list is here. Your RAM isn't on it, but the 2GB and 16GB variety is, so it'll probably be ok.

Just to make sure this is understood - the CPU you linked to is not compatible with the motherboard. See my post above for more info.
