Have Outlook 2013 on desktop and the official Outlook Preview app on my Nexus 5.

The new Outlook app for Android looks and performs a lot better, but seems to be sucking a lot of battery out of the Nexus 5.. Hopefully that will improve!

I hate Outlook with a passion. I usually have Gmail webmail open for filing, but I don't like the 'new' compose functionality. So I have Opera Mail for general reading and replying (checking 6 IMAP mail accounts - 3 GMail, one Exchange, two Mercury Mail). There are another couple of Exchange accounts I check either via an Android App or OWA web access (I've taken Outlook off my laptop).

And I also sometimes use Pegasus Mail when I need an email Swiss Army Knife. I'd use it more often if it worked better with IMAP, but (sorry David) development is glacial.

I use the Mail application that comes bundled with OS X, my email provider is iCloud - I have tried using Office 365 'Exchange' for a custom domain but I could never justify the cost associated with it because it didn't give me any 'edge' over sticking with iCloud. I prefer using an application rather than a browser, IMAP over using pop3 since I prefer leaving the mail on the server.

Have used Thunderbird with a gmail account for many years but TB now doesn't print emails, presumably because I am on Win 10.

Thought I might move over to Winmail Live but then decided to try the Gmail browser interface and I think I will just stick with this.

Something less to manage and update.

Thunderbird. I have 4 email addresses to check and when I reply I want it to come from the correct user/domain. It's quicker too, provides reasonable searching (though I use MailStore home for search and archiving mostly). When I do work for customers (I have a side business doing tech support focusing on web and email) I sometimes end up adding 2-4 more email addresses to check what's going on.

used gmail in chrome for years, so much easier, chrome is always opened, no syncing issues, better search etc.

curious to know what it is about Outlook you hate?

is it the IMAP support maybe in an older version?

I'm still using Thunderbird, primarily as my wife have separate email accounts but share the same Windows logon.

Like many here I've found Thunderbird increasingly dodgy - it seems to struggle ("not responding...") with even relatively minor tasks these days which is driving me crazy. This includes the search function - I inevitably use the Gmail web interface for this.

I've tried various other alternative Windows apps but found none that are a long-term replacement for Thunderbird. We only use Gmail accounts, so not surprisingly my experience with using Outlook for these accounts has been unsuccessful.

Can anyone recommend a good (free) Windows email client as an alternative to Thunderbird?

If you only need a maximum of 2 accounts then eM Client could be an option. I set this up for my parents as a Outlook replacement about two years ago when they didn't want to pay for the new version, and it's been going great. Works well with Gmail, better than Outlook ever did.

I don't use it myself, I just use the Gmail webclient, however when I've used it at their house it's been fine.

Still use Eudora and have since early 90s. Still use my isp address I got mid 90s from Ihug. But then I dont like change so maybe thats why I still use Opera 12 as well lolz.

Biggest hate would be the enforced top posting style of replies. (I'm an old fashioned email user.)

I find having long chains of upside-down email conversations awful. There is no way to trim an email reply, and make it clear it has been edited. There is no way to reply to specific points in a reply individually, without editing the quoted email, highlighting the edits in red (say), then noting what you've done above. Argh - awful. And Google Mail now makes it hard to avoid top posting, but it is possible. (Yes, I know I'm in an ever shrinking minority, but I will never concede.)

Also the whole interface is very clunky - seems old. I do like having everything very tightly integrated though.

EM Client is great, I would highly recommend it. http://www.emclient.com

It has a free version for home use, you really cannot go wrong. It is far more responsive than Outlook, however quite similar.

I use the standard Mail app with OS X. I want to use Outlook (I have access to the latest version via Office 365) but there's one thing that really annoys me. I can't resize images in an email with it. I am always sending images to people explaining how to do this and that. With the Mail app in OS X I can resize and markup all from within the app.

I use Outlook 64-bit for about 8 addresses (ISP, gmail, hotmail, websites). There are other products far easier to use for most users like Thunderbird and Window Mail/Live Mail. I was originally only trying it out for a ffew months. But I found that there was no migration path out of it if you used the stored folders which I do.
