richms: The US power connector is a dangerous piece of crap. At least find something with IEC inlets and outlets so you arnt putting anyone with a finger at extreme risk when working near the equipment.

If the component does not have an IEC inlet, is it ok to use something like this....

Yeah those are fine. PB sell them dirt cheap. Its just the US plug will fail any finger test ever made, and even an adults fingers can touch the pins when they make contact with the socket.

I think you have your pricing wrong. Try an approximate sale price of $300-$350 including GST.

Hi anyone tried the Arlec ones sold at bunnings for $50? or the $80 Belkin wemo devices DSE or Leemings etc?

I want to control a DIY ceiling ventilation fan, and probably the TV/freeview/home theatre/soundbar in the lounge, both currently on basic timers. The ceiling fan power point is in the roof cavity and needs a step ladder to access.

I also switch of my PC/printer/PS3 including ADSL modem/router at night so the kids turn off and go to sleep, but may have problems doing that by IP. Unless the Wifi switch retains settings once programmed.

Another reason I turn stuff off, when not in use, is that I have grid connected solar power (4.8kW).

The arlec one looks exactly like the wiwo from orvibo that is about half the price of bunnigs on alixpress.

I have one, and it works ok.

I also have 4 of the kankun ones, they also work fine.

Not doing monitoring I bought a ego efergy off pbtech that will report some power use stats back to you, but its really laggy with its updates and not very accurate.

All seem to take about 2-4 watts depending on what I measure them with, and the ego and kankuns actuallyget noticibly warm on one part but that may just be their construction has the hot part against that bit of the case. so factor in incresesd power usage if you are just using them to turn something that is a handful of watts off anyway you will probably not gain anything.

I use them on things like aquarium lights where they are a pain to set timers, and also on the filters so that I can cut the power for 15 mins in the app at feeding time so the food doesnt get sucked straight into the filter.

Thanks for the recommendation, just ordered three Orvibo for Aliexpress.
Cost with credit card fees $71, only downside is the wait for shipping.

Those universal style sockets arent that great for appliances you actually want to be earthed in most cases.

? why's that? Surely they'll be earthed seeing that the IEC connector is earthed. Also no good around curious kids as the holes are larger.

Because the metal contacts are far enough apart to support the giant UK plug that they dont push in enough to contact the 10 or 15A AU plugs earth pin. Some have a thin part that does, but it quickly bends out of the way. Also the distance back from the face means that you can angle a AU plug enough to get the live and neutral to connect before the earth pin has made contact which is the reverse of what should happen.

Those things are all fine if you are using it and are aware of the problems, but not if you are giving it to other people.
