You asked for something for FSX - FSX dosent take advantage of multi-cores - G3258 has great performance for single threaded programs - take a look here as a basic comparison.

Clock speed isnt everything either and also your existing setup is at least 2 years old - tech changes :)

Also, you can have the prettiest looking graphics around - dosent mean a thing if its not moving above 25fps ;)

What is your budget?

What FPS are you currently getting?

What don't you like about the current setup?
you mention overheating but didn't provide temps or issues faced due to "overheating"

How much RAM do you have?

What gfx card do you have?

I did a bit of hunting around FSX forums, just for you.

This spreadsheet is a bit out of date, but it's a bunch of guys doing FPS comparisons on different hardware running FSX. There are _2_ AMD cpu's on the list, and they are both near the bottom. Interestingly enough it looks like FSX isn't just CPU bound as the GPU appears to matter somewhat as well according to this spreadsheet and some other posts/blogs on FSX performance.

Some other posts I've seen indicate the GPU does matter if your using HD texture packs for FSX.

My revised suggestions are either 4960k or 4970k, minimum 8gb of RAM, a GTX 970 GPU, and an SSD. Until I started diving into this for you I didn't realise quite how demanding FSX is with all the addons and HD texture packs etc, it's almost the new Crysis! :-P

I guess the only down side is you can't see the performance as far as graphics goes.

Out of interest;

When looking at the CPU what is 'Clock'? and under GPU what is 'Cores'?

"Since Flight Sim X is a few years old, it puts much more emphasis on CPU speed than do many modern games. So the faster your CPU, the better overall that Flight Sim will perform. We typically recommend a quad core Haswell Core i7 like the 4790k"

Not exactly. That page isn't recommending that CPU because it's a quadcore, they are recommending it because it basically had the best single threaded performance on the market. For FSX it being a quadcore is pretty much irrelevant, it's the fact that each of those 4 cores is insanely powerful.

Also re your other questions:
"Clock" is it's speed GHZ, most of the CPU's in that spreadsheet are overclocked well above stock, some VERY heavily.
"Cores" is what it says on the box. Just like a dual core, quad core, etc CPU means 2 CPU or 4 CPU cores on one die. Yes modern high end graphics cards often have thousands of cores.

This isn't a FSX specific guide, it's simply a single threaded raw performance comparison, but it should give you a rough guide. Basically the higher score (nearer the top) a CPU gets on this list, the better it's likely to be for FSX.
