Oh wow, this thing is flying now. Near instant boot up and navigation in Windows is fluid as it gets. 144hz monitor helps the perception of smoothness too I guess.
OK it's the memory. A stick of 8 from my server brings me to POST on the display, I can at least crack on from here later and get the BIOS updated and an OS installed, and I'll probably just leave the RAM swapped around with the server until I decide what I want to do there. Just means I'll only have 16GB in the PC as it only has 2 slots and the server had 4x 8GB. But at least I know things are working. Thanks again all who replied with advice.
