I use an email address to log into Authy. I had it on my computer long before I had it on my phone.

Google Authenticator can be transferred to a new device now days. You're right it's no good if you break your screen/lose the phone.
Also a good idea to actually store the backup codes, rather than just look at them and think, naaah i'll never need that.
What f you have two devices with Google authenticator and you want to transfer both and merge them to a single new device. Is that possible? I do also wonder what happens if thee device just dies and not able to be restored or becomes corrupted etc. Same if someone steals the device. It just seems so prone to problems if the unexpected happens..

huh, I never knew that. I've always used my phone.
I've just installed the Windows app and (as far as I can see) you can only login with a phone number and there's no option to use an email address.
As soon as i logged in I did get a "new device logged into your account" email though.
