The more I look in to this, the bigger the nightmare.

Finding a new email provider seems likely to be straightforward enough. I do really like the Gmail interface though, so would likely be bringing all the emails back in to Gmail anyway.

But I also use the same google account as my main phone account, so has a tonne of app purchases and (potentially worse) app log ins and progress. As far as I can tell, there isn't a way of transferring those out to anything.

I'm pretty sure you can use a non-Google email to set up a Google account though. If anyone is testing, I'd be super interested to know whether a Gmail legacy account can still be used even if email is transitioned away?

Gmail, Calendar and Play/Android Apps are probably my big uses. Most of the other stuff I think I can either live without or transition easy enough.

But perhaps lesson learnt about vendor and ecosystem lock ins... $120 odd a year to kick the headache can down the road for a year is looking like my most likely option.

Pay Google. Sad but true. $9 (+gst) per month is kinda crazy for a service from a company where they already take so much in terms of information - but they offer no option to migrate to Gmail, and even the idea of losing all my auth / apps / google docs etc is painful.

That is a bargain IMHO for a custom domain with email.

And if I was paying that for a service that didn't overtly spy on everything I do and monetise my personal information in ways I am sure even the most rabid conspiracy theorist couldn't dream of, I would agree and happily pay.

But they're doing both- so I going to begrudgingly pay because I have no realistic choice.

Cheers - N

ifs on the high side actually.

$6 per user per month office 365 exchange account

$3 euro mailbox.org

zoho was about $4 aud I think

only Microsoft bet Google for storage though.   Most dropped to 5-10gb.

most allowed for multiple domains as well.

Very glad I've kept all my other Google stuff (app store, Youtube Music, etc) on my Gmail address.

Amazon WorkMail is USD 4 for 50GB. Interestingly, they are already (or have always?) promoted ease of transition:

For a limited time, Amazon will pay the usage fee and basic support costs* for you to use <migration tools> to migrate your email to Amazon WorkMail

I've got some stuff on a gmail address (photos and music) but not everything. #worstofbothworlds

davidcole: ... Might take the opportunity to exit google.

Exit to where though? Microsoft 365 is not to my liking & doesn't offer all of the other integrated services?

you’ll have to evaluate what you’re after.

my big sticking points are storage, multiple domains and a catch all.
I’ve got one trial running with Microsoft.  But will start one with mailbox.org as well.

Sorry about that. Opened the tab & got side tracked. By the time I published my post, a whole bunch of people had already replied.

davidcole: ... I recently moved those to a self hosted Nextcloud anyway.

Any reason why you chose Nextcloud & not OpenCloud? Also, are you self hosting of paying for a VPS?

not sure.  Nextcloud came from owncloud.  Seemed to be fairy well supported.

self hosting.  I have looked at self hosted email before (and still run a server - but don’t use that for external)

This is going to take a bit of evaluation, decades of family stuff in the Google ecosystem. I've got plenty of hosting around the place if it's just email but taking on the various other migration tasks might not be worth the hassle over paying up. Will have to see how many accounts can be merged.

For others looking at hosting a bunch of addresses and/or domains but not needing heaps of storage, MXroute is handy for that purpose.

Welcome to the world of getting screwed by Google.  They did this to their low tier paying customer last year.  The removed a number of things from the lower tier (including the unlimited storage on google drive) and then offer them back to people at almost twice the price they were paying.  My monthly bill went from around 18NZ to 30NZ a month to keep the things I used before.

Only reason why i stay with them is all my google apps purchases were made on my domain google account (with no way to transferring them off) all my discounts for signing up early for youtube premium / youtube music will be gone if I move away.  My machines currently all backup to google drive so currently using about 6TB of space for those backups.

The only current good thing about all this is they are still not enforcing the "must have 5 accounts to get unlimited drive space, if less than 5 then you get 5TB max"

Nextcloud is free and open source.  It was forked from Owncloud when Owncloud wanted to start making money off it.  If you self host Nextcloud is it completely free, but you can pay them for hosting and support if you want.  Or some third party service.
