The 923+ is using an R1600 chip. Literally any other chip in that series would have integrated graphics.

Replace a perfectly good model with an inferior one then charge extra for the + version...

Not everyone needs transcoding, so this may be an upgrade in other ways if you have other things you want to run on a nas. I believe they should just serve files and things should run elsewhere so just buy cheap SFF computers or pi's to run services on instead.

not really i would suspect transcoding is just a small portion of the market. the ryzen CPU are a lot more grunty than their predecessors along with being better on power, so if you run a lot of containers or VM's or cameras then it can be beneficial.

but do we really need transcoding as much these days with good internet and mobile speeds? guess it depends on how you store your media

Yes that's what most of the negative comments appear to be about. Why brand the 923+ as a Plus product if it appears to be taking a step backwards from the previous 920+

Totally valid that not everyone needs transcoding. It just feels odd that such a large feature would disappear, and makes the upgrade decision more complicated than it otherwise would be if it was just a whole cloth upgrade.

you say large feature but what else is it used for apart from transcoding?

I just use emby with direct play.

The feature I was referring to was, in fact, hardware transcoding. However that is achieved (GPU, QuickSync, or otherwise).

If I have a NAS with a bunch of cameras in Surveilance Station with motion detection (on the NAS, not the camera) and a bunch of stuff in Docker, as I currently do, then it's nice to know that having a bit of transcoding done isn't going to possibly bog down the whole thing.

Anyway, we obviously see it differently and that's fine, I don't have a horse in the race either way. For now I will be sticking with my 918+. The only thing I will miss is the optional 10gig ethernet.

I attended their internal announcement a couple of weeks ago, and one just landed here. It doesn't have the graphics but it's not inferior. It is faster, supports more memory than before and up to 10 Gbps ethernet.

It puts their hardware in an interesting spot as it looks like it’s now competing more directly with something like the business oriented QNAP TS-473A, which has a great deal more expandability and better hardware out of the box (has 2.5gig Ethernet as standard, for example). Depending on where the 923+ ends up being priced, the QNAP might be a bit more expensive though.
I do prefer the Synology software myself, having already migrated from QNAP to Synology a few years ago. That’s more a personal preference thing, I guess.
None of it bothers me, it’s just interesting.

DS223+?

Any ideas when the 2023 models will be available? Just wanting to know if I should hold off with the DS220+ and wait..

According to: Synology 2023 NAS – Confirmed Releases, Rumours & Predictions – NAS Compares

You're looking at Q1 next year, so it might be a while. The 1522+ is already here, and the 923+ is imminent.

This is the new DS923+, announced a couple of weeks ago and available in New Zealand now (PBTech link).

Horses for courses I suppose. But if I was after a NAS for Plex / Emby, which I'm not, so I should probably shut up, I'd go for the $400 cheaper 920+ while you can.

Thanks for the replies. After days of research, I just pulled the trigger on the DS920+. Probably overkill for me but it should hopefully futureproof things for my needs.
