@MichaelNZ is up that way - maybe he can help. But seriously Foss needs to trust the person setting it up for him. I’d not be doing anything except a virtual machine and given the importance of this machine there will be no way anyone in their right mind would set this up again on bare metal hardware.

My 2 cents on this and sorry for not taking time to explain before.

If you run XP on older hardware then you have the risk of that hardware failing taking your disks with it.

XP may not run on newer hardware.

VMs are quite straightforward and a good way to get a clone of the XP machine running on new hardware and running faster than XP-era hardware.

VMs can be easy to back up. You back up the whole thing in one go.

Plus you sit in front of one machine not two. Less clutter.

Hopefully that might explain (some) of the reasoning behind the suggestions.

I've passed on details to @MichaelNZ who lives just a stones throw from Foss. I can't personally help myself (I seriously don't have much time these days for even my own personal projects) but I am sure Michael should be able to get him sorted and having somebody just down the road will be a bit better than myself who is still over an hours drive away.
