Beccara: Shame it's interface doesn't have an advanced mode, I dont wanna have to go thru and exclude all my folders, there are only 5 I want to backup!

Yep, that bugged me too but I got over it :-) I now am quite happy to let it just go for it... although when I shoot an event I exclude each folder of average raw files, at least until someone has the guts to produce a flat rate account (or unmetered upload) that I have faith will remain for more than a month or 2.

Cheers - N

Apart from Slingshot (who generally have awful performance imo), Hosting Direct and NZNet currently offer unmetered ADSL plans for reasonable $.

Yep, and I plan to wait a few months to see how their service goes now that it's becoming wider knowledge...

I do know people on SS and HD, so let's see how long HD lasts :-)

Yeah if they were offering naked adsl I'd sign up to HD on our 2nd line and test it out but it's standard adsl only atm I think.

Also with HD's chequered history prudence is probably wise.

freitasm: "The storage can be used with Gmail, Picasa Web Albums and Google Docs"

Hmmm, no thanks. I want "BACKUP". It includes documents, photos, videos, code, executables for all the programs I have and need to reinstall in case of a crash, gaming data, etc.

I've never understood this online backup.

You gonna download 100GB to restore your data if the system crashes? Makes no sensewhatsoever.

Surely a $100 500GB Portable Hard disk would be much faster and more cost effective!?

how do you recover from a fire that burns your house to the ground, external hdd included?  or how do you recover from an external HDD thats stolen along with your main computer when someone breaks in and grabs everything they can see?

damn straight i'd download 100GB of data if all my onsite backups failed.  you can get that down in less than 24 hours on a decent broadband connection.  if I had to pay even $5 per gig overage for it, i'd still do it, my photos and home videos are worth keeping...

Most places also offer an option to get a hard drive sent to you with your data as well. And as pointed out below, if you have just lost all your data and your local backups then yes, you might DL 100GB+ of data.

To say nothing of the usefulness of getting back just what you need, or what's most important, or even using it to get at files when your on holiday with the family and your PC at home is shut down!

Personally I also maintain offsite backups elsewhere in the city, but the online backup is a final level of security I hope I never need.

Yes people would, because some data is priceless and irreplaceable.

Don't know if you have noticed but there be earthquakes and floods in the news, a USB disk at home or off site in the same city may not survive.

Why not just hook directly into amazon S3 storage?
Their are a number of scripts/tools that make it easier to perform backups to it. and you can get it working on your (cough) Mac, x86/x64 Win, or Linux flavor fairly effectively.

Yeah, Price 100gb is about $40nz/mth. Heavy users or users with alot of movies and photos could be looking at $100/mth to backup their stuff

We're long time Mozy users who recently upgraded from iPhoto to Aperture and it was going to re-upload our 134GB photo library. But, because we're Slingshot naked ADSL customers I figured I'd give backflip a go.

The mac client is absolutely hideous to use and look at. But if it remains the far cheaper option I may have to stock with it. Crashplan looks quite good as an alternative.

Very dissapointed with Mozy.
