Hey,

I don't use Mozy myself but I think a few fellow GZ'ers do so thought this might interest you.

Mozy are dropping their unlimited data backup plans.

i still have 1.5 years on my prepaid 2 year plan.. perhaps they'll bring it back in that timeframe, or increase the single computer plan a bit more by then :)

I have around 110GB backed up from my home computer. Its all photos and home videos. Grows by a couple of GB per month these days.

My currently usage (135GB) will make my plan jump from US$104/yr to US$251/yr.

Very expensive. Someone suggested http://www.crashplan.com and I will look into it.

Why not use google storage?

400GB for $100USD per year
200GB for $50USD per year

I use this along with a product called Gladinet which monitors a change in my files and synchronises instantly providing me with a full real time mirror of my data.

"The storage can be used with Gmail, Picasa Web Albums and Google Docs"

Hmmm, no thanks. I want "BACKUP". It includes documents, photos, videos, code, executables for all the programs I have and need to reinstall in case of a crash, gaming data, etc.

I do backup  'documents, photos, videos, code, executables" and iso's to Google storage with no file limitations using Gladinet.

Google also state any file uploaded to Google storage not in an approved google format counts towards your storage limit. I know Google could change their terms and conditions (or enforce them more heavily) but whats the chances, and I have local backups also.

Just food for thought Freitasm.

Some of my files are larger than 1.5 GB - the iTunes movies for example (a truckload), or my PST files - about ten of these.

I use Idrive which is excellent. Pricing is ok depends if you fall into the personal or business model.

Not long. An alternative is you get a NAS at home, and another one at a relative's place. Then install Logmein Backup...

Yep 1024MB max upload per file, lower limits for google formats.

I suppose $100USD or so you pay for cloud storage per year is not that much.

You have PST files over 1GB? Isn't that slow? Have you thought about migrating to an online solution like Google apps gmail for a total online solution? Its very fast, easy to use across multiple computers/sites, and Google has developed integration with windows file association so if you click a mailto: tag it will load an online/offline Gmail app.

Also how much of your critical data (excluding PST files) are over 1GB?
It does seem quite expensive to backup movies online, and what would be the benefits over a local backup solution?

I have 1.2TB with Backblaze. Still $5/month unlimited and they offered a coupon "byemozy" for a discount when you join.

Have had nothing but boring old excellent service from them. The client SW is less configurable than Mozy (it'll back everything up except for specified exclusions) but it has been really reliable for me.

BTW, 1.2TB represents about 7 years of digital photos including raws. And I also have offsite local backups and a daily backup at home. Yes, call me paranoid.

Cheers - N

Don't assume things. I didn't say I use PST files as my main email solutions. I use a Microsoft Hosted Exchange account. My emails are online, and I archive these to PST files at the end of every year. I have archives going back to 1995 in my PST files.

Those PST files are automatically indexed and only used when I search for something.

If you buy an iTunes movie you can only download once. If my house burns down the local backup solution won't help me with the movies - or with anything else really. That's why I have an online backup.
