joker97: I looked around for these mini computer sticks to see what is available and to my horror there are about 1000+ different kinds, (ie the chinese clones) ... i gave up searching. will wait till an amazing product comes out that will play anything (1080p mkv format) my network windows computer throws at it via wifi streaming.

or if someone can point me to one. budget: minimum

get the Intel branded one, it will have the best ongoing support

somehow i have to agree. i think i'll wait a couple more generations. don't need it now. using a laptop to do that work - the up side is the files don't need to be streamed, it's in/connected to the laptop! maybe that will be possible in the future sticks :D.

I had a look at the Compute stick. Definitely looks like something I would be looking to get in the future at least. Would server as a great media centre device. I would again wait for a couple of generations for the tech to be refined and them to sort out the kinks..

I was looking at the HP Mini Pavilion as a possible media pc, but then this beauty got announced. For this who want a little more power, have a look at the mini pavilion - it might be a good option.

I was looking at the HP Mini Pavilion as a possible media pc, but then this beauty got announced. For this who want a little more power, have a look at the mini pavilion - it might be a good option.

I just ordered HP stream mini last week, still waiting for it to be delivered.

Will stick with the HP stream mini for a couple of years, and switch to the compute sticks after 2 or 3 years

But great concepts... Intel is leading the market in this area...

How are the specs differnt from a pipo or similar box or stick with baytrail from china?

Same rubbish 2.4 only wifi.

Fewer USB ports.

and this one has no analog audio out for when the useless intel HDMI support decides to use DVI mode and they cant manage to fix it.

Better hold off a bit, people. Some problems currently with the stick, not able to run some win 8 apps. They are aware of the problem, and have already changed manufacturing to sort it -- but original sticks, like mine, will need an update, which I hope is RSB.

Apart from the win 8 apps problem, mine works well EXCEPT it won't work through my powered HDMI switch (OK, I know, cheap AliExpress, but everything else works fine through it). No problem as direct HDMI TV input. Does anyone out there have any thoughts about ways of sorting that problem?

If no joy, I'm considering getting an HDMI to VGA converter, and running that into the TVs as I have a spare "computer input" vga connections on the TVs, so no need for the HDMI switch. Again, any comments from out there?

Have had PC issues on a HDMI switch before, unless it was on the PC when the PC was powered on. Otherwise it was just no display to the PC and it ignored it, and it didnt generate the plug and play detection when you changed input.

A slightly cheaper HDMI switch solved the problem.

Just heard that the windows apps fix for the compute stick is now available at
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=24946.

Now, naturally, I am waiting for others who live dangerously to apply it before I do!

Kudos to Intel for fixing (I hope) this so fast.

Who did you order it from and what did you pay?

Ordered from Amazon, paid $330 in total for the hp stream mini plus a 4gb ram upgrade.
the little box is quite cheap, but shipping is around $30usd with amazon direct shipping.
Also bought 256gb ssd to upgrade the hard drive.

Intel patch for compute stick (above) works for most everyone, completely fixes the win 8.1 apps problems.
