We have multiple Google accounts each, so at home I use Mailbird on Windows. My partner has my old MBP, and uses what I did on that machine, Sparrow.

TinyTim: I hate Outlook with a passion. I usually have Gmail webmail open for filing, but I don't like the 'new' compose functionality. So I have Opera Mail for general reading and replying (checking 6 IMAP mail accounts - 3 GMail, one Exchange, two Mercury Mail). There are another couple of Exchange accounts I check either via an Android App or OWA web access (I've taken Outlook off my laptop).

And I also sometimes use Pegasus Mail when I need an email Swiss Army Knife. I'd use it more often if it worked better with IMAP, but (sorry David) development is glacial.

curious to know what it is about Outlook you hate?

is it the IMAP support maybe in an older version?

Biggest hate would be the enforced top posting style of replies. (I'm an old fashioned email user.)

I find having long chains of upside-down email conversations awful. There is no way to trim an email reply, and make it clear it has been edited. There is no way to reply to specific points in a reply individually, without editing the quoted email, highlighting the edits in red (say), then noting what you've done above. Argh - awful. And Google Mail now makes it hard to avoid top posting, but it is possible. (Yes, I know I'm in an ever shrinking minority, but I will never concede.)

Also the whole interface is very clunky - seems old. I do like having everything very tightly integrated though.

you  can make most of the changes you ask for in outlook.   Try experimenting with custom views.

1. email account, I use ISP, work, private and free accounts depending on the occasion. Don't sow a trail with your ISP account, it makes it that much harder to change.

2. I generally find web based account management to be utterly dreadful, gmail is an excellent example of far too much complexity obscuring the actual content of the email, I can't tell the boundary of a single email from a thread it decides it should be part of.

3. MS Outlook is a winner

The web may be the future but it's UI is consistently twenty years behind the desktop.

Outlook.com email address.
Check all emails with Mailwasher and then download the ones I want with MS Outlook 2010.

I didn't think that I could with custom views, but I'm not an expert. Will have a look.

I use Apple's Mail app, I have Google hosted email for work and home with a private domain. I only use it web based if I really need to.
