Has anyone else come across this sort of thing and know what to do?

To be honest, you have zero real world options , without buying a newer product.
CGA claim may get you nowhere, for numerous reasons.

You'll need to go to Disputes tribunal, hope to get a ruling in your favour and then spend alot of
time & effort to get any ruling actually enforced . This could leave you no better off .

Im stuck with a similar issue. Long obselete software , cant be activated online & company ignore emails regarding activation .
Customer didnt pay for the (expensive) support option
Original software developer's company sold a few times making things even harder.

Yes it's got to the point now where you want to solve the problem by any means, in order to carry on working with these files, and give up on the software company to do the right thing.  You have the license already so see no moral issues using a pirated version, you inferred it was available that way and a reasonably popular product.  Jump on PirateBay, get a version that looks alright, load it on a dedicated machine if need be to check it's alright.  As others said, it will be only be a couple of files need to patch over your own install.
