For me the loser in all this might actually be Dropbox, Thinking of switching over to Microsoft 365 Business Basic and canceling the Dropbox sub. It costs slightly less and gives me email + storage.
Talkiet:
And if I was paying that for a service that didn't overtly spy on everything I do and monetise my personal information in ways I am sure even the most rabid conspiracy theorist couldn't dream of, I would agree and happily pay.
But they're doing both- so I going to begrudgingly pay because I have no realistic choice.
Cheers - N
Yes paying for a service in addition to datamining is defiantly double dipping - I agree with that

I friend of mine was talking about migadu email last night (I'd never heard of it), but they price based on email/storage volume not domains or accounts so that might be an option that suits some people.

CYaBro:
But sorry Google they probably won’t pay you to keep those as I’m sure I’ll migrate them to 365.
This is the problem. For me, I'd love to move my account over to Exchange Online but I'll lose Google Play purchases, and any Google "accounts" I have logged into (for example - YouTube where I am starting off fresh again). Many people are totally trapped in the Google ecosystem and trapped paying them after this change. I fully bet there are going to be lawsuits because of this. There is no migration path from Google Workspace to Google Accounts.

Another thing that @michaelmurfy mentioned to me last night when I mentioned having Office 365 Exchange Online was backup. I use the Synology Backup for Office 365 (and Google Workspace for wife's business account) to make sure I have all emails on a different platform (my NAS at home).
Some emails services may not offer the option of taking out your data - if they fold you lose it. So consider this as well when going for a new service or hosting yourself.
And remember Google Takeout.

So far out of a Microsoft 365 Trial, Mailbox.org trial and fastmail - fastmail is the best (IMO).
Microsoft 365 - lot of fussing around to get a domain not in godaddy to work. And could only handle one. All documentation was office 365 based not Microsoft 365 fasmily.
Mailbox.org - added one domain easy, couldn't add a 2nd, got a help call in with them for how to do that, and what plan I need. Lots of german makes it way into your emails etc.
Fastmail - so far the most versitile. Added one domain, depending on the mailbox.org trial I'll add a 2nd. Managed to get a catch all going as well.
As for google, had another gmail account, started moving youtube subscriptions and playlists to that. Did have some vidoes, but none to be worried about.
I do have play store access but I might have to reset phone (a work one) to swap that to something else.

I'm struggling with this bit too. You can create a Google Account with a non-Google email address. I have a hope that if I move my @surname email etc. away from Google, the Google Account might remain active. I can point the MX records at a new provider easily enough, and turn off Gmail in the admin console. But hoping that someone who pulls the pin on their account first might be able to confirm. Otherwise I might pay for at least a year to buy some transition time.

Missed a few of these providers mentioned above when looking at moving from ISP email - signed up with Zoho for the year and so far so good and good price in AUD - great UI for management and setup and works well with Cloudflare where domain is managed.
Had heard of Migadu - fellow GZer from memory and have also looked at MXRoute, missed their black friday sale unfortunately ($99USD for life).
As mentioned by others storage amount for subscription seems to be a key consideration....

You should be able to move your domain to another service but keep your G Suite for free and maintain your login, apps by using Google Cloud Identity.
I manage two Google Workspace accounts (in-laws and wife's domains) and I have a user on each with a free "Cloud Identity Free" account and Administrator roles. This means I can log in to their Google Workspace but have no access to Gmail. It's purely to establish identity and login to it.
Obviously, you would change these licences AFTER migrating email, documents and photos. You would still have a problem if your Android device wanted to sync photos to this account.

freitasm:@Batman:i see that microsoft is a bit cheaper but with 1TB and you get office. do you know how many emails one MS Subs gives? with google workspace i get 30 emails with one sub.
(PS i like gmail app but despise outlook app :(
Are you talking Microsoft 365 For Home? Those include Microsoft Accounts (hotmail, live, outlook) but not your own domain. You have to use Microsoft 365 Business which is a bit more expensive.

Office 365 is pretty robust and unlikely to "fold" however has been unavailable for quite sustained periods of time on occasions , and unless you leave your outlook running syncing your latest data to OST I think it make sense to have your latest data "available" somewhere else e.g. Synlogly backups

So I must say, it was relatively easy to move all my email into fastmail.
I've got all but one of my domain names pointing at fast mail, so doing some weirdness with aliasing at teh moment. But I did then set up a sync from my 1 remaining domain that is still gmail based and fastmail has pulled all that in and keeps it up to date.
Once I have my wife's email across, then I'd be ready to shell out some money to fastmail and cut off the email from g suites.

What client are you using for email? I really like the Gmail web and app interfaces so kind of feel like I will IMAP email back to gmail anyway, which seems to be a bit of a perverse outcome.
