if the samsung OLED was the 3440x1440 one its the same panel as the alienware one and reviews very similarly, with the alienware one slightly nudging it out. so if you liked that you will likely enjoy the alienware one.

if you run the display optimisations you should be ok, pluse thye odffer a 3 year warrany on it. not ideal having to send it back but at least its there.

BadCo: The Alienware AW3423DWF is currently the nest going monitor and after some research is the one I am going to get.

To update this, I bought one and it is great. But...it is small.

Previously I had three 27" TN panel monitors, and when I unboxed the AW3423DWF and stuck it on my desk next to one of those 27" monitors, it looked small. The AW3423DWF is about 3mm smaller in vertical height then the 27" monitors.

Maybe a 38" 21:9 would be a better size, I'll have to wait for the QD-OLED to come out in that size.

Don't get me wrong, I'm using this for gaming on linux and the picture quality and variable refresh rate is fantastic, even with my 4th Gen Intel and only getting ~50 FPS in some games, it is so much smoother. I can't speak for HDR as it isn't supported in Linux...yet. It is also good for multitasking, it is a great size/resolution/aspect ratio for side-by-side browsers.

re text clarity of my OLED (LG 27" 240Hz)

while it's fine on Microsoft programs (windows, office) - you do get strangeness when you put your face close to the monitor
however on non Microsoft stuff - some websites, some apps, the text are pretty bad in their clarity
so pretty hit and miss on the actual thing that produces the text

I don't use it for text, gaming is sweet.

re monitor size, i had a 32" 16:9 4K and it was too big for me, wayyyy to big. had to downsize to 27" (16:9)which is the sweet spot for me, as 24" was too small.

So I've now seen the Alienware, and the Samsung. The Samsung is better in pretty much every way to me. I prefer it's glossy appearance, the text is a little bit better and it has no fan. It's also cheaper.

Having said that, I understand LG are making some big changes to their WOLED panels in the coming 18 months, specifically to improve the text clarity, and 3rd gen OLED monitors will have even less chance of Burn In. The Alienware, on display at JBHIFI in Melbourne had burn in already. I asked them how long it had been on display (it was off when I went there) and they said about 2 months.

CES 2024 is right around the corner and a number of announcements have been made already by LG, none in the spec I want, but inevitably, there will be others who will make announcements. I'm going to wait and see, but I'd expect to not see anything announced at CES prior to June, plus I'll wait for reviews. WOLED doesn't look as good to me, but they are making some active attempts to improve the monitors for productivity, and their layouts work bettter with Windows out of the box, so I expect them to get their stuff fixed faster.

Its the same panel? the text is exactly the same, you cant magically fix the offset subcolour pixels

As for the price the dell has gone up by $300 in the last month. dont know why as its still the same price in the USA.

Here is a 6 month and counting test that shows that burn while it maybe be present is really only detectable in certain situations. just make sure the panel refreshs are setup and running

Well, I have seen them both, spent at least 30 minutes with each and displayed the exact same text, perhaps the burn-in on the Alienware had an effect, or glossy vs not) but it was noticeable, to me, there was difference between the two monitors.

I'm bummed they didn't get to the 34" UltraWide 1440P Gen 3 OLED though, that would be my unicorn.

Doesn't really look like we will see 34" Ultrawide 1440P in next gen OLED at this stage. 240hz and better text clarity and I'd have been very excited.

Yup, agreed it all sounds good, but they are only incremental improvements. If there was a 38" I would have been annoyed at my timing haha.
