It's only going to take 3 months for my 500GB worth of data to be backed up according to their progress calculator. It seems to be transferring about 1MB per minute. Perhaps that is due to it being hosted overseas. At least I have got unlimited data with telecom while their meter is down for tivo cusomters.

I back up internally (covers accidental deletion).
To another machine (hd failure etc)
Then Thirdly I have the cloud backup.

richms: Anyone know if it does upload de-duplication between computers on the family plan? I have heaps of stuff that is the same on all my computers

It's supposed to, however it's probably worth waiting a day or so between backing up each PC as some systems run dedupe as a background task, so it could take a while for their dudupe database to be updated.

Having said that some file types don't dedupe very well at all, as a test I backed up 10GB of photo's to a backup platform at work which supports client side dedupe and compression and unsurprisingly I had to upload pretty much all of it, so your mileage varies

Its basically year by year stuff I have done that I have backed up by putting on most of my computers, so a majority of the files will be the same and the only differences should be at the end of PST files etc where I have opened and things have been marked read etc on only one computer.

I have pretty much got 2 copies of all my photos uploaded (about 30 gigs) as I created a new folder structure at home to help organise them a bit better. Was worried that it would try and upload them all again but the system worked perfectly. The size difference increased as expected but no further data was uploaded. Very clever stuff.

Im expecting it to work like that on the same PC, but not too sure about between PC's, will see once this one is totally backed up and then I will add #2 to it.

I have had mine going for over 6 hours and it has only backed up 60MB of files although it is using 200MB of space on the server. Seems to have disconnected too, and won't reconnect to the Crashplan Australia server. The software says the server is offlline. The android app also shows a server error, so not sure if the server being used it backup on is down. Not impressed with the service so far, at least it was free for a year but it isn't something I would pay for..

I reckon their servers are probably getting smashed by all the new customers. Once things settle down I'm sure it will be back to normal. My initial seed a year ago took about 3 days for 45 gigs

Same, is showing the Australian service down, although I can still telnet to daa-syd.crashplan.com on port 443.

I got a decent amount backed up again last night with it. I have it set to only go between 1 and 7 since that is free. Almost got all my old tech work and important email files backed up so will start to add other stuff soon.

One more question. How does crashplan handle drives moving between computers that are backed up on the same family plan?

Has anyone else noticed a big drop in speed in the past week? I'm lucky to get 200Kb/s now, I used to get around 700-800. I'm just wondering if the influx of new customers is causing some performance problems.

Currently uploading at 544Kbps myself. Not sure If some quota management from my router has kicked in, and my account is based out of the states anyway.

I uploaded ~28GB last night between 1-7am which is a steady average of 10Mbps (maxing out my line).

I'm on Snap VDSL with all your can eat nights, so in 10-12 more nights I'll have fully seeded with no impact to my cap :)

Getting about the same up to them on snap VDSL overnight so there is definatly no issues with crashplan.
