The GTX980s are selling at really good prices (as low as $749) so it is a great time to upgrade to that if you don't need bleeding edge.

Ok we get it!

If you read the post he alludes to maybe getting the RX 490 (yet to be announced)

Yep. That's what I was alluding too. The new card from AMD still seems quite impressive though (admittedly with no benchmarks yet), and am keen to see what they'll put out to compete with the 1080/1070 line (490 or whatever they decide to call it) - and at what price.

Good price if you are quick enough to grab one.

$799 for a GTX 980ti

good deal if you don't plan on VR gaming. Otherwise, the gtx 1070 might still have better VR performance than the 980ti

that price is huge compared to the $379USD they expect it to go for, add 15% gst which is about $640NZD then add shipping so say $750 tops to get here

no wonder people end up buying from overseas

To be fair only the founders edition is launched at $449 and Nvidia are having supply issues at the moment so price gouging is everywhere (even the US)

Wait for 3rd party coolers, nvidia to sort its manufacturing issues with 16nm at TSMC and then hopefully someone sells at GTX1070 for the MSRP then NZ prices should go down considerably.

with the latest WHQL drivers, the gtx1070 was actually a bit faster than the 980ti by about 7-8% according to this video

Next week or two, for sure. Supposedly though, you won't get much more than 2ghz out of any of the air cards, only way to break through 2.1ghz is water cooling. I'm thinking I'll put a water block on my FE card st some point down the line, though, because there's a decent bit of sound under load.

I'm considering custom air coolers because the Founder's Edition on my other rig does get loud at times, I'm going to add a Corsair/EVGA water cooled solution on the FE card later. Adding a water block sounds good, too bad I already have a H100i GTX on my CPU, otherwise I would totally get a EKWB Predator + one of the prefilled QDC waterblocks on the 1080.

And they have stock! holy crap. $899 is not as bad as I thought it would be. Hopefully the partner boards will be a little cheaper. I would definitely be up for getting one then.
