So I must say, it was relatively easy to move all my email into fastmail.

I've got all but one of my domain names pointing at fast mail, so doing some weirdness with aliasing at teh moment.   But I did then set up a sync from my 1 remaining domain that is still gmail based and fastmail has pulled all that in and keeps it up to date.

Once I have my wife's email across, then I'd be ready to shell out some money to fastmail and cut off the email from g suites.

What client are you using for email? I really like the Gmail web and app interfaces so kind of feel like I will IMAP email back to gmail anyway, which seems to be a bit of a perverse outcome.

Mix of theirs, ios mail, and windows 10 mail.  They also have ios and android clients.

Maybe it doens't have all their filters etc that gmail does - or maybe it does, I only just thought of that now.

Amosnz: I friend of mine was talking about migadu email last night (I'd never heard of it), ...

I use their services.

  • They seem to sell their services similar to Metaname: We focus on email (DNS) and we do that that well because we know what we are doing
  • Based in Switzerland
  • Very lightweight interface, simple & effective
  • app access via IMAP
  • very good admin options
  • only recently enabled filters, so still testing those out
  • I use their Micro plan (small home based low volume business)

    • US$ 19 per year
    • Unlimited users
    • 100 incoming email / 20 outgoing per account (We are metering account usage across all active domains and mailboxes on the account, which get counted together towards the plan quotas.)
    • 5GB storage

For those that are interested in an alternate way to do email & are only worried about email, not the whole Google ecosystem

Give Hey a try

Email sucked for years. Not anymore — we fixed it. HEY’s fresh approach transforms email into something you want to use, not something you’re forced to deal with.

Their idea sounds great, but I can't justify the US$99 per year for 1 email account.

I’ve got 6 mailboxes on the legacy plan. I need to migrate them to an alternative. Not particularly tied to the Google ecosystem which is helpful, all I’m using is the email, nothing else.

my domain hosting is with discount domains. It looks like I can get 10 mailboxes for a reasonable annual price and the service includes ActiveSync, which would be a nice benefit.  I’m happy to pay for a simple and reliable mail service.

Are NZ email hosting providers all pretty similar? Anything to watch out for with discount domains?

So why not pay for Google Workspace then? Just the cost?

6 mailboxes will cost about $750 NZD per year. I can’t justify that coming from $0 per year. DD email hosting is $100 per year, I’m happy to pay at that sort of level.

I don’t use any of the other Google services like Google Drive or web hosting, it’s purely email that I need.

Clients will be iOS and Windows PCs and webmail.

Yeah fair call. My first preference would be Microsoft as I already pay for 365 personal but I’m not interested in the workarounds required to get it to work with a custom domain (or paying business prices for the 365 exchange option).

Given it is still early days (yes, Google have announced it but I have not gotten official comms yet) I am just going to wait.

Yes, I am grumpy but at the same time this is a free service I've had since around 2008. Google are going to be offering some "deep discounts" and how deep is yet to be seen. I would recommend everyone just take a breath and chill for now, look at other options but just hold on until you get the official email from Google announcing their plans, the pricing etc as you could be kicking yourself later if you didn't wait.

Some of the options posted here are outright dodgy - I highly doubt they'll be offering things like DKIM and DMARC and instead you're paying for very basic IMAP email which is a huge step back from what Google offer. Also as you know Google have incredible search and I can tell you now you're going to hate the search on many of these alternatives as I have tested most of them over the years.

Still almost $500 pa including tax for 6 mailboxes. I might pay for 365 if I only used one or two mailboxes, but a locally hosted option at $100 pa for 10 mailboxes seems much better value, unless there’s a compelling reason not to go in that direction - in which case I’m all ears. It’s a shame it isn’t easy to use a custom domain with 365 personal or family plans.

Office 365 Family is limited to 5 users anyway

Reasons to go for Exchange Online P1 or Office 365 Business basic

* 50GB Mail

* Syncing between outlook/mobile phones "just works"

* Enforced Multi Factor

* Reliable Multi Billion Dollar Compan, unlikely to fold

* Calendar Sharing

If you add business basic like I have you get

* 1TB One Drive

* SharePoint

* Teams

Seriously $500p/a for that is a bargin
