So have I got this right?

If we don't renew we will lose access to the Workspace apps: Gmail, Drive, Meet, Calendar, Chat, Docs/Sheets/Slides, Keep, Sites and Forms. (And hence also Contacts and Groups.)

But will retain access and data in other apps: Youtube/Youtube Music, Photos, Maps, Earth, Books and Android; probably others.

Do you have a source for this? AFAIK it's pay for all of that or nothing at all. I am working based on this assumption to be on the safe side in any case.

...and there-in lies the problem. Not everyone using GSuite to manage a family domain is an IT professional. I don't think it's a case of 'pull up your bootstraps' or whatever you want to to think it is when a number of services linked to these accounts sound like they'll be effected if you move away from Google. It's not really that helpful tbh.

It is quite tricky for certain services. It ranges from the likes of Email which is fairly easily to migrate all the way through to YouTube which requires quite a bit of detective work and some IT wizardry.

One thing I have learnt in recent times is to be mindful of what sort of system I put my data into. I'm much more wary now of services with no obvious migration path out of the service should I choose to leave in the future. I just wish I thought of this before putting my eggs into the Google basket.

Impact to services after you cancel Google Workspace

  • You lose access to core Google Workspace services, such as Gmail, Calendar, Meet, and more.
  • You still have access to Additional Google services, such as YouTube, Google Photos, and Google Ads.

If you have Cloud Identity, you will still have access to certain core Google Workspace services, such as Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Keep, but with these caveats:

  • Administrative controls and settings that are available only with Google Workspace will be removed. These controls include audits, reporting, sharing policies, and alerts. For information on file sharing permissions for Cloud Identity users, go to Drive file sharing permissions.
  • Your users' storage capacity will be reduced to 15 GB. If your users purchased additional storage, it’s no longer available.
  • Shared drives—After you cancel, you can view shared drive data, but you can’t edit, move, or delete the data or drives.

Got the email just now, no detail in the email of what the 1 year of discount options are and trying to go through the upgrade progress errors "Can't get data due to an unexpected error. Please try again."

Dear Administrator,

We are writing to let you know that your G Suite legacy free edition will no longer be available starting July 1, 2022. To maintain your services and accounts, you need to upgrade to Google Workspace.

We launched our G Suite legacy free edition —the original Google Apps offering for businesses and schools— 16 years ago. In 2012 we discontinued this service, and we will now transition all remaining users to an upgraded Google Workspace paid subscription based on your usage.

What does this mean for my organization?
In 2020, we introduced —Google Workspace— and tailored our offerings to provide more options to fit our customers’ needs. Google Workspace includes all the features you already use, plus several new capabilities including more storage, increased security, 24/7 support, and more.

Upgrading from your G Suite legacy free edition to Google Workspace will only take you a few short steps and is not disruptive to your end-users. To support you in this transition, you will have discount options for 12 months after July 1, 2022.

What do I need to do?
To avoid disruption and maintain your account(s), please upgrade to Google Workspace by May 1, 2022. Begin the upgrade by reviewing the transition help center article, and selecting the option that best suits your organization’s needs. When you've identified your preferred subscription:

Go to your Admin console.
Select your new subscription offering.
Enter your billing information.
Once you’re upgraded, you can use your new Google Workspace subscription and functionality at no-cost until at least July 1, 2022.

If you take no action by May 1, 2022, Google will begin upgrading your organization seamlessly to a new Google Workspace subscription. The new subscription will be based on what you currently use with your G Suite legacy free edition.

If you do not enter your billing details before July 1, 2022, your subscription will be suspended.

If your needs have changed and you do not want to upgrade to a Google Workspace subscription, you can export your organization’s data with the takeout feature.

FAQs
Visit the help center for information on the G Suite legacy free edition to Google Workspace transition.

We’re here to help
If you have questions or need assistance, please Contact Google Workspace support. When you call or submit your support case, reference issue number 205265775. If you have trouble accessing your administrator account, please refer to instructions to reset your administrator password.

Thanks for choosing Google Workspace.

So I am accepting the offer and not doing anything for now as I expect class action lawsuits to happen - this is a cash grab, not a "we're retiring the legacy plan" thing. I could potentially understand if they wanted to retire the old legacy plan to bring things in line but it is clear they can do discounts / free plans too.

I'm moving one of my domains away from it to test other services and I'll leave my primary one on it for now to see how things play out over the next few months. I'm not willing to pay ~$90 per month for family email from google when I can get access to something like Zoho for $15-18 per month.

Yeah 50% makes for a fair price while we wait for the dust to settle.

How did you get on with the next stage of the checkout process? I didn't have a billing profile set up with this account, but it only lets me enter US states and US ZIP codes. Would prefer to keep it straigthforward rather than use a youshop address or similar

What about Microsoft 365 Family?  $165 a year for up to 6 users, 50gb storage though.....and I'm trying to work out if you have to have your custom domains through godaddy

We went for that.  However, it turned out that MS 365 email for custom domain names on a Family plan doesn't do DKIM. Whereas Business plans do.  We learnt that the hard way when lots of the emails we sent were going into receiver's spam folders.  I think it's something that MS will probably fix, but it didn't appear to be happening in a hurry.

So as an interim solution, we changed our email to Zoho, while leaving OneDrive, calendar, address book etc on MS 365.  This works OK, but is obviously doubling up on subscription costs a liitle bit.  I get a corporate discount on MS 365, so I think it's worth it, at least for a while.  Then when MS adds the full DKIM, DMARC etc to Family plan, we will flick the email back to MS 365.  BTW, Zoho has been fine - including good DKIM, SPF, DMARC etc.

Yeah, I've mentioned the no-DKIM on personal plans before. You need at least Office 365 Exchange Online.

I have not had this notification yet. I have only one account running at this time. I wonder if that's a factor. Maybe just a staggered rollout.

Top right of the page drop down from US and select New Zealand for billing location.

I am a bit late to this but last year I set up a custom domain for my family and went with the free Zoho plan. Up to five users on the free plan, with unlimited aliases. Unfortunately the free plan you can only access your email in their own mobile app or with the web interface. If you want a standard protocol like IMAP you have to pay. Limited to one domain but that is fine for my use case. The setup was fairly easy and it walked me through setting up DKIM, SPF etc. If you want to stay free that might be the best option at the moment. I looked at a few options and it is a big step to go from free to even $5 per user. The only other comparable free option was Yandex but I am not sure about them as they are often described as the Russian Google.
