Just thought I'd say this, after this issue (computer on auto update) i noticed the motherboard wasn't working properly. Fans not going, CPU heating up +++, programs loading sluggish.

Found that Asus had a BIOS update that included "updated CPU microcode".

Flashed the BIOS and things are better again. but temperatures are still a bit higher. Maybe needs new thermal paste?

SO, will waiting for 9th gen CPUs fix the "up to 30%" speed loss issue?

if so they better not come up with a 9th gen with no other improvements!

This pisses me off the more I think about it.

I've got a i7 PC which performs just fantastically, I wouldn't normally upgrade for another year or two.

But there is no chance it will get the BIOS update as its 1 generation behind what the motherboard manufacturer intends to support (even though intel will make updated microcode for it).

So I'm pretty much forced to upgrade the CPU (wont be cheap to get something better than what I've got now), mainboard, and memory too. F that.

Wouldn't worry too much about it at this stage - there are ways of updating the microcode without doing a BIOS update, Microsoft may end up doing it through Windows Update as Intel improve the mitigation and get their rebooting issue sorted. Even a VMware tool which

Also there is clever stuff going on at the software level too; browsers are disabling their high resolution time sources which mitigates browser based attacks, Google's 'Retpoline' mitigation technique etc

PC World is expecting the speed loss will be baked in.

Meanwhile Intel is saying 'don't install the first version of the patch' and several major vendors have removed it from their sites.

And now Microsoft has released an update to disable the previous update in case you have installed the Intel firmware and see problems in your systems. Things are getting to fustercluck stage.

after some googling I just read that the rebooting issue is with the haswell and broadwell cpus. Luckily my haswell laptop is set to manual updates and I havent gotten round to applying the patch. my 6000 series cpu has not been rebooting so that was good as that one's on auto update.

Sadly the reboot idssue is not just haswell and broadwell, thats just what it was initially reported as being on.

Intel have stated it also affects "Ivy Bridge-, Sandy Bridge-, Skylake-, and Kaby Lake-based platforms".

Their latest recommendation linked above it to stop deployment of updated microcode.

I'm glad I decided to wait and see. Fortunately nothing I do is important and nothing I have is critical. If I get wiped out, I will just start over. If someone steals my access codes, they will just get very bored. This kind of thing is the reason I still don't use Internet banking.
