Morgenmuffel:

if I cancel my G-suite and host the email elsewhere do the apps break?,

would they get locked out of their devices etc?

Thanks in advance,

You'll lose access to the core apps but keep access to other apps including Android:

If we don't renew we will lose access to the Workspace apps: Gmail, Drive, Meet, Calendar, Chat, Docs/Sheets/Slides, Keep, Sites and Forms. (And hence also Contacts and Groups.)

But will retain access and data in other apps: Youtube/Youtube Music, Photos, Maps, Earth, Books and Android; probably others.

I signed up just to get domain mail in an easy manage gmail based box too. With the help of the old + trick.

Now if I could remember my original domain catchall MX record priority/settings, I might be able to change it back fairly easy.

I'm trying to sign up. When I go to enter the billing information it insists on an American street address with no option to change the country. Google search has been a bit of a fail. Does anyone have any pointers?

Top right corner from memory on the page there is a dropdown to select your billing country.

Prompted me to check in on the latest. On the Google support page:

In the coming months, we'll provide an option for you to move your non-Google Workspace paid content and most of your data to a no-cost option. This new option won't include premium features like custom email or multi-account management. You'll be able to evaluate this option prior to July 1, 2022 and prior to account suspension. We'll update this article with details in the coming months.

They even have a feedback form for personal users to sign up to get more info about different options:

If you have 10 or fewer users in your group and do not use your G Suite legacy free edition for business, please complete the form below by April 1, 2022 if you're interested in learning about different options for your account in the coming months.

I have a friend who is a lawyer who has been using the legacy account for years. He has 10 accounts but only 5 are active but the rest are archives of staff who have left but have valuable information in their emails. He has a custom domain off his Gmail account.

I've decided to recommend they just switch to the paid version.  The additional cost is a business expense and can easily be recouped with a couple of hours client billings :-)  That is better than my trying to find another solution which is cheaper or free.

I personally use Zoho Mail with 5 accounts and a custom domain and it's free. Currently the DNS is held by somebody else so I need to migrate that but can't be bothered. Zoho is fine but 5G of email is a bit limiting.  I am constantly having to delete old emails (mainly newsletters etc I subscribe to) but it's a pain. I might look at Amazon's email service since the 50GB looks quite attractive for $4/month (which is one coffee really)

Has anybody received any further updates about what google might be doing for family users?

I have several domains, and about 9 family & friends and really don't want to go through the hassle of migrating everyone.  TBH it would really be a hassle to even have the talk with everyone about them having to start paying...

I’ve just transferred my email from GSuite to Migadu (www.migadu.com). Unlimited mailboxes for USD19 per year suits perfectly (my 6 mailboxes are small and not used heavily).

Setup was painless and very clearly documented. They just do email and appear to do it well in a no-nonsense fashion.

I’m currently copying the last of my Gmail across to Migadu using the fantastic imapsync tool (https://imapsync.lamiral.info/X/) which is free for mailboxes less than 3GB.

Did you use the labels in Gmail? Very keen to know the handling on this. All my exports from GMail to Outlook have resulted in duplicate emails across multiple folders 🤬

I had filed all Gmail emails into folders, using the gmail labels to achieve this. So I probably wasn’t using Gmail labels to their full potential, only to replicate an imap folder structure.

Imapsync replicated this structure perfectly inside my migadu mailbox, you just have to remember to turn off All Mail from showing up in the imap folder list in the Gmail settings. I didn’t get into detail with deduplication with imapsync as I didn’t need to but the documentation and options for the paid version at least are overwhelmingly detailed…

Slightly off topic, but man do I wish Outlook had Gmail's labels. Things belong in more than one bucket sometimes, Microsoft. Categories almost works except it's not fully cross platform, and the implementation is certainly cleaner in Gmail.
