A while ago, my computer died. It was quite old and it was probably due.
The hard drive (thankfully) was OK though, and I bought an external housing to put it in so I could hook it up via USB to my new computer. This has been working fine.

Today though, it does not seem to work :(

I have a couple of other external USB drives, and I wonder if it is because last night I placed a drive on top of this other external drive when i was using it? Like could the magnetic field from one drive wiped out data when placed on another drive?

I just can't seem the access the old drive any more.

Not possible however if it is an IDE drive I would double check the Jumpers, And ofcourse the obvious double check all the connections, cables, etc and make sure power is getting to it in the first place.

the most likely scenario is it has overheated and corrupted the partition table or the file table older HDD's tend not to like temps over 45c as it causes the r/w head to fall below its optimal height this causes errors to occur

have you tried doing a check disk on it to see if that fixes it failing that fixing it you can try partition recovery software
