Hi all,

Would appreciate some suggestions on what to try next.

I upgraded my graphics card in the desktop so I wanted to try my Asus ATi EAH6850 in my HTPC.
Tried it but couldn't get any video, so just thought well that's enough of a try and went back to using HTPC as per normal via HDMI.

But now I have no video output at all...

I have unplugged everything except the boot hard drive. Tried all ram slots with just one stick.
Attempted DVI, VGA, HDMI outputs, none work.

One unusual thing is now when I hold the power button it doesn't turn off the PC. This definitely worked pre-disaster. Not sure how this could be related, but mentioning anyway ;).

Motherboard is a Gigabyte 780G, 640GB WD, Antec HTPC case with stock 420W PSU (should easily be enough).

Turning on, all power works, fans spin up, no boot beeps. No ram inserted, no boot beeps either, which is odd.

I want my HTPC back :(

Thanks!

Is there a setting in the bios to select whether you use the onboard graphics chip or dedicated video card?

Hi.

I have no display so I can't check that unfortunately.
Pretty sure there was. But I have run off HDMI as long as I have had the HTPC.

I have tried VGA and DVI to LCD.
VGA DVI and HDMI to plasma. No display whatsoever.

If you aren't even getting the boot beeps, then it sounds like it's not even getting to POST - I'd double check all your connections, and maybe check your motherboard manual to see if it has any troubleshooting tips/LEDs.  I'd wager that a power connection or something has come loose...

Have you tried resetting the CMOS? This should return to the default settings and it should give you video back.

There are many threads on the internet about how to uninstall your onboard graphics before you install the new card.

Unfortunately no post on CMOS clear. Using jumper, shorting battery terminal, and removing battery for about 5 minutes.

PAIN :(

I'd remove everything possible - all add-on cards, hard drives, optical drives.  See if you can get it to POST with just CPU/memory/motherboard/power supply - I'd also check to see if your memory and CPU are seated properly at this point.

If it still won't POST, then it's one of those components that has failed - you could substitute another power supply if you have one handy.

If it POSTs, then start adding peripherals until it stops working again (if at all).

Can you clarify that you are getting video now?

Also can you clarify if the beeps sound when it doesn't post and what does the code signify? If its a Gigabyte board, then it's probably an Award Bios and the codes will be available on internet.

Removed everything possible. No beep codes, no video, only fans spinning.
A friend suggested this is a motherboard issue. I will start an RMA, but try a different PSU as a last resort tonight.

Still under warranty luckily :).
